Dearest Diary,

I have the most wonderful news! Today is the end of the war! I can finally leave this place and go home to my family. I wonder what my children look like. Will Fred have sprouted up into a young man? Has Martha learned to read and write? I cannot wait to embrace my darling Valerie and kiss her passionately as if it is going out of fashion. Dearest Diary, you have been my greatest companion over these past four hellish years and I am forever grateful to you for that. I am going to bring you home with me to show my family my account of this loathsome experience. Farewell for now, old friend. It looks as though I’ll be home for Christmas after all.
