Anyone can wear a mask, but few are good at it. When my sister decided to throw a masquerade ball for her birthday, I couldn't believe how easy she was making it. You see, I have a... gift. The moment my parents found out, I was thrown out of the kingdom. My baby sister got my claim to the throne. Mine. While I had to live alone, shunned by everyone, she got to have everything. And I wanted it back.
I slowed to a stop just outside the castle gates, looking up at the castle that would soon be mine, smiling at what was going to go down tonight. I slipped my golden mask over my eyes, and adjusted my dress before walking through the gates. No one batted an eye as I showed the guards the invitation that I had acquired. I was in.
I slipped into the ballroom with the other guests, searching for the precious princess. It took me a few moments to search the room, but I didn't see her yet. She probably just wanted to be fashionably late as always which was fine by me. I could wait as long as I needed.
"May I have this dance?" A gentleman in an intricate white mask held out his hand for mine. I gave him a small smile before curtsying, and handing him my hand. He led me to the center of the ballroom where other guests were dancing, and we joined in.
We twirled and spun around the floor in time with the music, and moved as one. A few other guests gathered to watch, but it was short-lived.
The music died down, and all attention was directed to the doorway where our gracious host made her grand entrance.
"Welcome my friends!" She beamed, waving to the crowd, earning herself a round of applause. "Thank you all for coming tonight to celebrate my birthday. I cannot wait to lead you as your deserved Queen in a few days. Until then, enjoy the festivities!"
I started toward her, before my dance partner grabbed my hand, leading us back to the ballroom floor. We danced until the song was over, and I slipped into the crowd to find my sister.
When I spotted her again, she was talking to a few of the other guests, so I waited until she was alone to approach her.
"Your Grace." I said, biting my tongue to not show my disgust, and curtsied to her. It took all of my will not to kill her now.
"Good evening!" She beamed at me, making my blood boil. "Are you enjoying the ball?"
"Yes, Madam." I faked a smile. She smiled back, gesturing for me to follow her towards the doors to the balcony. We walked out into the night, leaving the loud ballroom for the isolation of the outside. Perfect for my plan.
"It's such a beautiful night tonight." My sister rested her arms against the railing and looked out onto the kingdom. I joined her, looking out to what would be mine in a few hours.
"Very beautiful, Your Grace." I stated, reaching into the folds of my dress to grab the knife I had hidden.
"It's too bad you had to ruin it." She said calmly not taking her eyes off of the kingdom. I froze. "Did you think you would be able to talk to me without me knowing who you are?"
She finally turned to me, her face contorting into a mixture of anger and disgust. She grabbed my mask, ripping it off to reveal the markings on the top half of my face; the markings of a seer.
I pulled out my knife, disregarding any discreetness I had been trying to keep.
"Sister." I hissed as she calmly looked me over, looking almost unimpressed. I lunged at her, but she easily gravbed my arm and pulled the knife out of my hand. She then made one quick motion; stabbing me in my abdomen. I gasped in both pain and shock.
"You see, sister, you're not the only one with gifts. You will never get what you want. I know everything you do. See everything you do. You. Will. Never. Win." She said bitterly, before yanking the knife out of my stomach. I shuddered in pain, collapsing on the ground as she watched me with cold eyes as the life drained from me.
My eyes shot open and I fell to my knees looking up to the entrance of the castle. My fate was sealed if I went to the ball, but I did learn a very valuable secret. I wasn't alone.
