we woke up the next morning feeling energized. that was until we heard about the assembly. we dressed in the various of uniforms and made our way to the grand hall where the entire school was gathered, well except for the lower grades.

josie, lizzie, and i sat in the front row and listened intently. father stood at the front as he started the lecture. "given our recent influx of monsters, the sheriff and i have decided we need to take drastic action. please give him your full attention." he said letting sheriff donavan take over.

"like dr. saltzman was saying, local girls dana lilien and sasha stoteraux didn't come home last night. dana sometimes skips town for a few days to party, but this is a first for sasha." he explained letting father take back over.

josie handed me the pictures of dana and sasha. i looked them over before handing them to lizzie on the other side of me. my father cleared his throat. "thank you, sheriff donavan. now while the knife is away with dorian and things are quiet on his end, it won't hurt to assume the worst. if dana and sasha...." he continued on. but my mind was somewhere else. i had glanced over my shoulder to see mg and kaleb looking unsettling. i raised an eyebrow suspiciously as i watched.

i eyed kaleb as dr. saltzman kept speaking. i couldn't help but wonder if he'd been responsible for this. "dude if you don't stop mugging me." he said annoyed. "you heard ol' blue eyes. dana has a history of running away."

i shook my head and gave him the 'what the fuck' face stephie always used. "i saw you feed on her." i reminded him whispering.

he rolled his eyes. "yeah, feed. not kidnap. mg, i'm telling you—vampire to vampire—this ain't on me." he said in a low voice and turned forward. i looked over slightly to see stephie staring at us. i nodded slightly before she turned around to face her father. i went back to listening to dr. saltzman as well.

i turned back quickly to my father before anyone noticed. "now, i'll need a few of you to volunteer to go to mystic falls high under the guise of an exchange program meant to improve relations between our schools, which, unfortunately is necessary, given recent events. now, i give you permission to compel them, to gather materials for locator spells, because any information we can get will make all the difference." he explained looking around the room before making eye contact with me. shit.

he smiled slightly. "that is why stephanie saltzman has volunteered to be the leader of this new change. she'll be in charge of making sure everything runs smoothly and harmoniously. work together." he explained gesturing for me to stand.

i stood giving him the death glare before turning to the rest of the students with a forced smile. "you heard him, we need volunteers." i said looking around. i didn't know what i was supposed to do. i looked down at my hand. five fingers. "i need five volunteers." i said randomly.

lizzie stood up. "well, i guess that i can set aside my differences with dana for a day, because that is what heroes do." she said placing her hands on her hips. "so...i volunteer as tribute." she said turning to our father.

i rolled my eyes. sit your ass down barbie. i'm sorry but it's true. i love lizzie but she's dramatic. this was going to be a long day. i looked towards mg and kaleb with hopeful eyes they'd save me.

i had made eye contact with stephie as kaleb interrupted my thoughts. "you're gonna be real embarrassed when i prove you wrong." he said shaking his head and standing up. "i'm in."
