Jim Hopper, chief of Hawkins, didn't do much the last years. He drank a lot of coffee, alcohol and smoked a lot of cigarettes. He was bored and unhappy. Popping some pills, just to forget his daughter Sarah, who had to leave him due to cancer. But now he said to himself that his lifestyle had to change. He made this decision after he got called that the boy Will Byers is missing. Will Byers is the son of Joyce Byers, Hopper's high school love. Today is the day he is going to change, for Joyce. So he can do his job properly and find her boy back. He doesn't want that Joyce has to go through the same pain he had to go through.
Hopper drove up the driveway of Joyce's house and immediately he became nervous. He knew it wasn't the right moment to be nervous, the day her son was missing, but he couldn't help it. But he was sure he will bring Will safe back home. This was his only mission that had to succeed. Hopper walked at the door and wanted to knock, but Joyce already opened the door before he could do it. He saw she had cried a lot, and he didn't judge her for this. He knew how it felt to lose a child. Before they said anything to each other, he pulled her into a hug. Comforting her.
He was disgust that Lonnie, her ex-husband, didn't care at all that his son was missing. Joyce had called Lonnie, but he just said Joyce had to leave him alone. Hopper was furious and wanted to go to Lonnie, but Joyce stopped him. Lonnie wasn't worth the effort. Hopper had let go of his idea, he wasn't going to hurt Lonnie. Maybe later but now he first had to find Will.
