Charles Condomine is a struggling writer who can't seem to get his new story started. Both of his wives have died, and ever since then, he has lost his mojo for writing. One morning, while eating his usual breakfast of oatmeal with a side of an English muffin and a mug of cappuccino, he happens to be reading his morning's Herald when he sees an ad for a hotel. Hmm,Hotel Eden, huh? I have been cooped up in this house by myself stuck on this book; a weekend holiday is exactly what I need. SoCharles picks up the phone and dials the number in the ad in the paper.
"Hello,my name is Charles Condomine, and I would like to book your finest room for this weekend."
"Certainly sir, and will your wife be joining you for a romantic getaway perhaps?" The man on the other end of the phone asked.
"No,because both of my wives are dead," Charles answers. The concierge doesn't know what to do with that information, so moving on, he replies,
"I see sir, and would you like a beachside view or a poolside view?"
"Umm...poolside view, please," Charles replies.
"Very good, sir, and how would you be paying for this?" the concierge asks.
"Cash upon arrival, if you don't mind," Charles says.
"Nota problem sir. So we will see you this weekend. Thank you, and it was a pleasure doing business with you." the concierge hangs up.
Just then, Charles hears a knock on the door. He goes over and opens thedoor,
"Hello,Madame Arcati, and what do I owe the pleasure of your visit today? Come to bring more of my wives back from the dead?" Charles quips.
"No,no, my dear boy, it a social call." Madame Arcati explains.
"Please sit. Would you like something?" Charles asks.
"A spot of tea would be lovely, dear" Madame Arcati responds.
"Coming right up. Sylvia, can you get Madame Arcati some tea, please?"Charles orders.
"Of course, Mr. Condomine" Sylvia responds.
"So,Madame Arcati, what would you like to talk about?" Charles asks.
"I had a vision this morning, of you." Madame Arcati explains.
"Oh,that sounds serious. What was I doing?" Charles asks.
"You were by a pool, and you fell in." Madame Arcati says.
"Madame, that is ridiculous! How could I have possible fallen in a pool?"Charles questions her.
"I don't have the answer to that, my boy. Have you booked a holiday recently?" Madame Arcati asks.
"Why yes, as a matter of fact I did. This very morning," Charles answers.
"Stay clear of the pool!" Madame Arcati instructs.
"Of course, Madame Arcati, I booked a beachside view, so you don't have to worry," Charles lies.
"That is a relief! Thank you, Charles." She gets up to go.
"Wait a minute, was that all you wanted to talk about?" Charles questions.
"Why,yes. And now I must be going. Have a wonderful holiday, Charles"and just as quickly as she has arrived, she sweeps out the door.Charles shakes his head, goes upstairs, and starts to pack for his trip.
