Chapter 19
A bead of sweat rolled down from his eyebrows that were scrunched together in worries. Nervously, he tried to call the number back, but it wouldn’t work. His heart started beating fast as her the anxiety in her voice echoed in his ears.
“Nick, help….”
He started looking around the room, pushing his way through the seas of girls in masks. A couple of people threw him mean glances in annoyance, but Nick couldn’t care less. He needed to find Scarlet now. Every pound of his heart became heavier and made him a little more dizzier and by the time he finished searching the whole room, she was still nowhere to be seen.
Breathlessly, he leaned against one of the mirror in frustration. He knocked his fists on it and with a loud thud, the mirror cracked right in the middle. The pieces sunk deeply into his finger and drops of blood started dripping down on the mirror. He watched in silence as the blood flowed down and clung onto the frame of the mirror like a hanging dead man.
And dropped onto the red carpet, disappearing into the pool of redness. He felt a sense of danger rising up within him, and suddenly he was trembling. His hands were shaking.
In fear.
“Nick.” A voice came up behind him, making him jumped. He whirled around and almost lost control when he saw who it was --- Noelle. He took a deep breath in attempt to keep himself from yelling at her, since she wasn’t exactly the one to blame for this situation.
Except she kind of was. Kind of.
“Nick,” she said, biting her lips. “I have something to tell you.”
“Not now, Noelle.” Nick sighed, turning away impatiently to the entrance of the hall. He didn’t have time for this --- he needed to find Scarlet. Now.
“It’s about Scarlet!” Noelle called out after him, and that did it. He stopped and widened his eyes in surprise. “Shoot.” He added, a little too impatiently, but Noelle didn’t seem to notice. She looked down at her feet, her face turning red for some odd reason, but Nick was too nervous to notice. He nudged her on the elbow as if to remind her the fact that he was still here. “What is it?”
“I lied.” She said, shifting uncomfortably.
“About?” Nick asked, eyeing her suspiciously. Noelle went on quickly, “Scarlet doesn’t like James at all. ” She explained shortly and looked at Nick to see his reactions. He looked as if he just heard the most ridiculous thing in the world.
“He’s her boyfriend.” He answered coldly.
“That’s because I sent him after her.” She looked away, her eyes lowered in guilt. Swallowing, she continued, “Because I thought she’s going to be threat. She loves you. And you got a thing for her. Don’t deny it, Nick. The whole world sees it.” She looked at him straight in the eyes, “I stand no chance in front of her.” She added miserably, a tear rolled down her cheek.
Nick stared at her, his face were twisted in disbelief and anger.
“I can’t believe you.” Nick said, turning away, but Noelle caught his hand.
“The thing is, James is bad news.” She warned, her eyes looked genuinely worried. “I know that more than anyone else.” She said, then seeing his confused look, and added. “He’s my ex. Two years ago, before I knew you.”
Nick ignored the fact that Noelle might have hinted that she left James for him. “I need to find her,” He said, unable to stand the idea of Scarlet being alone with that monster for a second longer. Who knew what he was capable of?
