One and Only

Prologue

Shiroyuki's past was a rough one.

With her abusive parents that beat her half to death for the first five years of her life and many cruel betrayals of those who promised to help her but only made things worse.

She was tossed onto the streets at the age of five and was forced to fend for herself after her parents revealed to her that she was adopted. Shiroyuki already knew this as she had asked her grandmother, her only remaining blood relative at the time, why she looked nothing like her "parents". She told her that her father died before she was born and her mother died giving birth to her and also told her of what she was and what she could do.

Shiroyuki is a Contractor, a human with an immense amount of power and is only born once every hundred years. They're also able to share their powers with their Familiars, if they choose to have any.

Familiars are similar to Servamps as they can only be loyal to one Master and also take blood from them, either to help themselves heal or to make them stronger in a fight. However, in order for a contract to be made between Master and Familiar, both beings must consent it. In other words, the Contractee has to want to become a Familiar and the Contractor has to allow it.

Once consent is given, the Contractor places their right hand on the contractee's left shoulder blade and they say the word "Familiarise". A bright light is then emitted from under the hand for about five seconds before the Contractor removes their hand and in its place, the Kanji symbol for Family is left behind, about the size of their palm.

Whilst living on the streets, Shiroyuki discovered her abilities but vowed to never use them against an innocent being or a human as she actually despised the thought of killing. She was highly abused by gangs and thugs who thought it would be fun to take advantage of a little girl and taught herself self defence so that she could defend herself against them. She was betrayed multiple times by people who promised to take her away from the abuse, only to find herself running away from those people's care as they only used and abused her further, and so her trust issues developed.

When she was eight years old, she was attacked by a vampire, but was soon saved by another who turned out to be none other than Sleepy Ash of Sloth. The two became friends and she called him Ash as he called her Shiro, but since Ash was already a part of his nickname a contract was not formed (A/N: Idk if that's how it works, but just roll with it). She eventually opened up to him a bit as he, surprisingly enough, did the same in return. The two became really close and he even promised to keep her safe from harm and that he wouldn't turn out like the other jerks who made her promises in the past only to break them.

He managed to keep his promise to her as he protected her from harm to the best of his abilities, but she wouldn't stand by and let him be hurt for her sake and chose to start protecting him too when she was ten years old. The two made quite a team and always had each other's backs and, although neither of them ever admitted it to the other, they had grown strong romantic feelings for each other too.

After ten years of their friendship, when Shiroyuki was eighteen, a particularly serious accident occurred which caused Sleepy Ash of Sloth to break his promise to her.

They were attacked by a particularly strong vampire and they did the best they could to fight him off, but it was no use. They chased him to a rooftop and all three were exhausted as they were all covered in numerous injuries but were too stubborn to give up.

Shiroyuki went to attack him again, but he managed to dodge around her before using his speed to grab her in a choke hold and hold her off the edge of the five story building, causing the Servamp of Sloth to become increasingly worried for her safety. The other vampire then proceeded to stab her through the stomach with her own weapon, the weapon disintegrating into thin air five seconds later, and throw her off the edge of the building as the Servamp of Sloth's worry for her increased rapidly and he quickly jumped off the building after her, after quickly landing a lucky blow on the other vampire and killing him.
