Sitting on James veranda, I finished telling James and Melody about my run in with Luca at school. James stares off in thought as Melody faces me with confusion drawn on her face

"Wait... What? So he was mad that you gave a bottle of water when he was smashed?" Melody asked as I took a drag of my cigarette

"Yep," I reply simply it was quiet for a moment as Melody seemed even more confused. I don't blame her, I'm still confused myself

"Seems like he was more mad on why you did it," James spoke up, I turn to him in question. Creasing my eye brows in confusion

"What do you mean?" I ask

"Well for him, you're practically a stranger now," I scoff in response "and knowing him, that kid hasn't seen kindness in years. Honestly I'd be surprised if he even knew what it was," he finished

James grew up with Luca and myself. James being only 3 years older. But unlike Luca and I, we stayed in touch. He was like an older brother to me, we've always been close and ever since we met, he's gone out of his way to protect me, and I'd do the same for him. James and Luca never really got along, but I was hell bent on making the two hang out when we were children.

His light brown hair swayed in the wind as he looked at me with his light, blue eyes; waiting for my reply

"Look, I just gave him a bottle of water," I say simply

"Yeah, but why? No offence, you're not the nicest person out there," James and I laugh at Melody's statement. James looked back over to me, probably wondering the same thing

"I just found it sad how he held himself," I rolled my eyes. Their unsatisfied looks on their faces made me continue with an irritated sigh "What? Am I not allowed to pity to him? everyone else does but they're too pussy to help the poor sack of shit. It was sad seeing him in that state," I finish with a huff avoiding eye contact with both of them, taking another drag of my cig to calm myself slightly. Why does it matter so much that I gave him a water bottle?

We gradually steered off the topic of Luca and Melody left soon after to get ready to go on a date with a mystery girl that she wouldn't tell us anything about. With a sly wink she got in to her car and drove off.

I put out my cigarette as James came and sat down next to me. In a comfortable silence, we watched the sun slowly set

"Were you being honest earlier?" James whispered. I look over to him confused

"About what? You know I talk a lot, gotta be more specific my man."

"About why you helped out Luca," he says slightly irritated. I narrow my eyes at him. What crawled up his ass?

"Yeah why?" I drawl out. What is he trying to get out. I take a sip of my water

"Do you like him or something?" I spit out my water as he says this

"Jesus!" I cough up the water "What are we in kindergarden," I slap my chest continuing to cough "Do you like, like him?" I mici James in a baby voice "No, Jeez" He smiles slightly as he looks back at the set sun.

"Alright, alright. I was just kidding. You know I don't like him, he's bad news" He laughs slightly.

"Yeah, I know. But like you aren't," I shake my head smiling, he smiles down at me. The setting sun causing a light glow On his features. He looks down as his phone buzzes

"You should probably head home soon. I've got some business to take care of. I'm serious though, watch yourself around Luca" he stares at me with an unnerving about of intensity, I nod slightly in response.
