"The nerves you have," you said through gritted teeth as Jason climbed through the window into your bedroom. Every muscle in your body tensed up and your heart grew with hurt and anger, beating violently in your chest.
He was out of breath and sweaty, the new Red Hood attire had a few missing bits here and there, revealing bleeding cuts. He was on edge.
You haven't seen Jason in a long while. When Roy died you wanted to be there for him and you needed him to be there for you, too, but Jason... He just cut you off.
One day he was just gone and you have not heard from him since.
He left you with a mission that was way too much for you to handle alone and the grieve of losing a close friend and, yes, a broken heart.
You thought you and Jason were starting to be more than just partners. It wasn't just all in your head. He gave you these signals, too.It was okay, though. You could make a million excuses for him after all. Roy was Jason's best friend, Jason has lost Bizzaro and Artemis and his family in someway or another as well. So much was happening in his life and so much has happened. It was fine... somehow.
"So, the whole wide world thinks you're responsible for all of this and the first thing you do is run to me," you cross your arms. "What if I think you did it, too?"
Jason relaxed, taking his mask off. He was still a little out of breath, but by now you were sure it was nervousness. His hair was sticking to his forehead and his eyes looked tired and empty. He didn't look good and that worried you, but at the same time he was the most beautiful man you've ever seen.
"Because you know I would never," Jason tilted his head a little as his eyes scanned over you.
"Fair enough," you nodded. "Though the reasoning behind it does sound like you." This Leviathan thing, it confused you. The length to which Leviathan went. Did they have powers? If not then how did they do it? Who was behind the mask?
He scoffed and grinned, "fair enough."
"I don't get how Bruce really believes it was you, though? He should know you better." You have been trying to dishiper this ever since Bruce came to talk to you. While their relationship is complicated, Bruce should just know. Period.
"He thinks Roy's death cracked me."
You swallowed. A moment of silence emerged. The mood darkened.
Roy's name being thrown in between you two was like a slap to the face. It would be a lie to say you have dealt with it, no, you have just locked all emotions away and you're pretty confident so did Jason. You were never good at grieving and if it's someone like Roy it's even worse. And frankly, it was the biggest reason for Jason's departure."You have been through so much and you have always kept going," you said. "I never considered this might be something... Something that breaks you."
Jason was silent. He turned away, taking deep, shaky breaths as he ran his hands through his moist hair again and again. Then he turned back to you with tears in his eyes, looking entirely defeated. He was at the end.
"He went there--" Jason's voice was breaking. "He wanted to get better."
You hated that suddenly the thought of Jason being Leviathan made so much more sense. For a moment you considered it.
"I should have been there for him. I should have been a better friend to him. Roy was always there when I needed him. He was the only person I could always, unconventionally trust. He didn't deserve it and I'm so full of anger. I lost everyone and yes, it's breaking me," Jason admitted, folding in posture. His shoulders were shaking as he tried not to sob. "But Leviathan is not me."
You walked over to him, putting your hand on his shoulder, squeezing slightly. You could knock him out right here and call Bruce, if you would 100% believe Roy's death would turn Jason into someone who could do this which you didn't. He has been through so much. Jason always hangs in.
"You still have your dog... And I'm here, too," you smiled just so faintly.
Jason looked at you and swallowed hard. His cheeks were red and sticky with tears while his eyes seemed the size of the moon. Jason wrapped his arms around you, burying his face into your shoulder. You were caressing the back of his neck, trying to calm him.
Your heart was pumping and your body felt like running as fast as you could. You have never seen Jason display so much vulnerability, you have never seen him cry. You hated every bit of it. Nothing could've prepared you. But you were glad he let you in.
If it turned out he was indeed Leviathan... Then you could be dead any second from now on.
But you were willing to risk it. Jason was alone. Everyone thought it was him. Jason and you together had a tiny chance to find who was really behind this.
And if you were wrong... Then you would deal with the consequences."We should leave. Bruce will suspect you'd come here at some point," you told him, still holding him close.
"I can't drag you into this."
"Then you shouldn't have come here in the first place, Jason. We're in this now."
Jason pulled away and looked at you, frowning, "I don't deserve that after what I did. I don't deserve your help after I left you when you needed me."
"You have hurt me, yes, but what does that matter now. It's not about deserve," you took a deep breath. "I'm not going to abandon you just because you abandoned me. It doesn't work like that. Let's go."
"(Y/N)..." Jason began, but you didn't let him finish.
