"You'll never catch me!" I say while taking the snap back off his head and running down the crowded hallway in our high school.
"I accept that challenge!" He says running after me. I turn the corner and almost run into an opening door, which makes me tumble to the floor. I get up and see him a few feet behind me. I squeal and continue running, snap-back in hand.
"YOUNG LADY, STOP!" The vice principle screams at me from across the hallway. I stop running and feel the blood drain from my face, a pair of arms wrap around my waist from behind.
"Ariel," He asks. "my hat please?"
"Maybe if you stop touching me, Lucifer." He unwrapped his arms and I turn around to face him. I handed him his hat back and he takes it.
"My name is Luke." He says.
"Well I obviously know that, I've been your best friend since grade five." I say matter-of-factly. He sticks his tongue out and I stick mine out at him in return.
"Can we go to the cinema today?" I ask him.
"No. Did you forget that we have a field trip to that museum?"
"Yeah." I run back to my locker, with Luke behind me. I dig through my book-bag and find an unsigned field trip permission slip.
"You didn't even get it signed?" He laughs mockingly, throwing his head back in the process. While doing so, he bumps his head into the vice principal, who happened to be walking past behind us. Luke turns to look behind him and his face turns red. "Sorry sir." The vice principal scowls and walks away angrily.
"I'll just sign it myself, Lucifer." I say to him. He glares at me, for the usage of the name I have said many of times before. Lucas is his actual name, but its more fun to watch him squirm from the sound of "Lucifer".
"Trouble maker." He says. I find a pen from my bag and scribble my mother's signature. "I've always liked your middle name." He says, as I print my name on a line below the false signature.
"I got it from my mom." I say, smiling. "Caroline Howard."
"What's your dad's name?" He asked. I never have really talked about my family with him, mostly because it was a sensitive subject.
"Oh, um he died when I was younger. My mom says that I was seven maybe, but I don't really remember him."
"I'm sorry." Luke says, whilst pulling me in for a hug.
"It's fine." I say.
"Hey Ariel!." Someone greets from behind me. Luke tenses up. I get out of Luke's embrace and turn around to see my boyfriend, Calum, smiling at me.
"Hi Cal." I say smiling. I awkwardly pretend to have an itch on my arm, as both boy's eyes are on me. "Well.... Calum and need to get to class. So I'll see you later, Luke." I quickly hug Luke and turn back to Calum. Calum intertwines our fingers and glares at Luke.
"Let's go, Babe." Cal says to me, and we head towards our next class.
"Love you, Ariel." Luke mutters, for only me to here. I turn my head back and mouth a response to him. We always say that to each other, our relationship consists of him being a brother-type-of-friend and nothing more.
The classwork included watching a dumb infomercial. The reason for that would be that we were in "marketing class". Calum sits next to me in that class. Which means that he always insists on us being partners during projects and assignments.
"I love you, Ariel." He would say repeatedly during the class. And I would always answer with:
"I love you too, Calum." I'm actually used to the repetitiveness of his kind words. I think that he is afraid that I will break up with him or someone will steal me away from him.
"I don't think you should hang out with Luke today." He says. "He's going end up stealing you away from me one day."
"Don't be silly. Your my Cal, and I'm your Ariel. He's just my best friend. I love you, don't worry because I won't be leaving you anytime soon." I say and kiss his cheek then smile at him. It was a good thing that the teacher was facing the whiteboard and not us. Calum grins at my words, making his eyes squint a little bit.
"I love you too, Ariel." He replies. "Nothing will ever break us apart."
