I see you standing there, but you're so far away.
She stood like a goddess, her shadow looking startlingly dark against the creamy walls of the administration office. Her hands were making excited gestures, wildly waving from side to side.
Starving for your attention, you don't even know my name.
Minerva, that was her name. It suited her. Minerva was the Roman goddess of wisdom, and she obviously was living up to her name by majoring in Law. Connor sighed. He felt so stupid- craving so much for her attention, while she didn't know his name, yet alone the fact that he longed for her to return his feelings for her.
You're going through so much, but I know that I could be the one to hold you
But as he looked closer at her actions, he could see that she wasn't really happy. The smile was just a little too bright, actions just a little too animated. Something had happened in her life that was big, that much was obvious. She was suffering and he hated to see her like that. All he wanted to do was wrap her in his arms and hug her athletic frame to his body, to have her rest her head on his broad shoulders.
Every single day, I find it hard to say that I could be yours to hold.
A simple hug could do wonders. Connor had been brought with that philosophy, to give a hug to someone who looked like they needed one. But things had changed as he got older. A drunken hug, which led to making out, and then escalated to a regrettable one-night stand. Many times that had happened to it, and he was sick of it.
He wanted to settle down with one girl, rather than go through dozens of girls and never be satisfied.
Even better, now he sounded like an old bachelor, on the verge of being a crazy cat man. Wait, didn't that only apply to single ladies? Whatever.
You will see someday, that all along the way I was yours to hold, I was yours to hold.
And Minerva- she was that girl that he wanted to settle with. He had bumped into her on campus one time, and was struck. As she walked away he was left glued to the spot, unable to move. After asking some of his friends if they knew anything about her, he was even more attracted to her. She had spent her holidays during high-school volunteering at an animal shelter that her aunt owned, and frequently donated to charities. She sounded like a cherub, but he knew that there was more to her than the cover she put up.
I see you walking by, your hair always hiding your face.
One thing he had noticed was that she wasn't very confident. Her choppy black hair always fell like a curtain over her face, so he'd never seen what colour her eyes were. Maybe they were blue, but that wouldn't look quite right on her face. And chocolate just wouldn't suit her face.
I wonder why you've been hurting, I wish had some way to say.
What had happened to her that caused her to wear a mask? Why was she being someone she wasn't? Who had caused her such pain?
Connor let out an angry sigh as he curled his fist into a ball. A lovely girl like Minerva shouldn't have to fake happiness, she should be happy. And he knew that he could be the one that would make her happy.
You're going through so much, don't you know that I could be the one to hold you?
Maybe one day she would acknowledge his presence with a nod. Maybe one day she would see him out of the corner of her eye and wave. Maybe she would even come over to say hi.
... He sounded so obsessed right now.
I'm stretching but you're just out of reach.
A short distance separated them, and he knew that he could change that. All he had to do was take a couple of steps.
I'm ready when you're ready for me.
Minerva just had to know that he was waiting for her.
And I'm waiting for the right time, for the day I catch your eye, to let you know that I'm yours to hold.
He'd been waiting for the right opportunity to approach her. The right moment to get her attention.
And that moment was right now.
He stood up and traipsed to where she was. Waiting patiently for her to notice him, he then stuck out his hand. "Hi, I'm Connor. I've been meaning to talk to you but I've been too nervous to do it earlier. I just thought that you might want someone to talk to and... I'm just going to leave now before I make a fool of myself." He pressed a small piece of paper with a 10-digit sequence before shuffling away, head down low.
The brunette next to Minerva elbowed her. "What are you waiting for? Go get him!" Minerva shot her a look. "Aly..." A tinkly laugh escaped Alyana's lips. "Hon, don't lie to me. I know you've been looking at him when you've pretended not to. Besides, he's pretty cute! You told me you like chocolate hair..."
A rosy hue began spreading up Minerva's face. "... Shut up. I'll go after him, just promise not to speak about this."
She darted after the hunched figure that was slowly getting smaller. "Wait for me Connor!" Those must have been the magic words as he stopped in his tracks and turned around, a smile slowly spreading across his lightly freckled face.
Doubled over, she paused to catch her breath before speaking again. "I would love to talk to you and get to know you better." The smile got even bigger, wider than she thought was even physically possible. But then he was hardly a small man, tall and built like a swimmer with lean but toned muscle. "And yes, you're right. I do need someone to talk to." Slinging her arm through his, she began leading them to the cozy coffee shop on campus.
And as they walked into the cafe, every one could see the matching goofy grins on both their faces.
