A Fresh Start

Free. So very free. I am finally free of my troubles at home. No more parents watching over my shoulder. I now have a place I can call my own. An apartment in a small complex. It wasn't much but I could see potential in it. No air conditioner, no television, nothing.

This apartment was located in Dallas, Texas. Six hours from my family. An unfortunate placement, yes, but worth it nonetheless. The walls were blankly painted a yellowed white. The floors were covered with a carpet that oozed dirt through it's seams. It was a real keeper.

By the time I had unpacked my things, it was about a quarter past seven. I wasn't tired but why not get some sleep. I had a new job to show up to tomorrow anyway. Showing up early would help me more than hurt me.

I lied in my bed waiting for my eyelids to become heavy. Nothing was happening. Not even a slight fatigue. Not thinking much of it, I brushed it off as an affect of the mid-July heat in my apartment. The scorching heat settled on me at that moment and I noticed for the first time that I was drenched in sweat.

The next day was a bad one. I had about three hours of sleep to fuel my activity. It was an exhausting day at the warehouse but power wing through it boosted my morality a little. Arriving home after my first day at worked I realized I had nobody to complain to. Nobody to talk to. I thought to myself it would be like this for a while giving the fact I was in a new state. It only made sense.

The darkness settled on me again. It was about nine. No cooler in the apartment. It felt even stuffier if anything. Another sweat drenched bed made me realize my shortage of money would not allow any kind of air conditioning unit. The slowly rotating ceiling fan served no purpose other than circulating heat. Yet another night with a few hours of sleep.

I was moved to dry side today. While moving I thought of something that would probably aid me in my bad sleeping habits. I would open my door to hopefully lighten the atmosphere. It wasn't a fool proof plan but it was a plan.

On my way home all I could think about was my idea. The thought if a good night of sleep seemed too good to be true. On my arrival it was only five. I would be patient, it's my only choice.

Another night set upon me, but this time I was excited. This was, without a doubt, a great plan. My only concern with it was that I may fall asleep without fastening the bolt. Either way a heat stroke presented a more likely threat than any burglar did.

I would be very cautious to stay fully dressed when my doors were open and keep the light right outside my door on in the hope of letting criminals know I was fully aware of what is going on outside my house. I would also try to remember to bolt my door before sleeping.

I was now going to put my plan into affect. I opened my door to nothing but disappointment. Instead of feeling a cooling breeze, I was greeted by the same air that had previously tormented me.
