Kaiden's point of view:

It's been more than 10 minutes now that my "new host family" has been preaching to me about the behaviour I must have in their home. The majority of their sentence begins with "You must not..." "You cannot..." or "You will have to do this or that...". As if I had something to do with their stupid settlement. It's always the same anyway. As soon as I get rid of what I can and can't do without giving me time to put my things away, even if I don't intend to stay here forever.

My new family consists of Myriam, mother, Andrew, father and Thomas their 11-year-old son. For the moment only Myriam speaks, in her high-pitched voice, about my behaviour in THEIR house while Andrew sits quietly in his chair reading his diary, giving a few glances at his wife when she raises her voice and makes her tremble vocal cords that give an even more acute sound to give us migraine. I hope that during my stay she will talk to me as little as possible, it will save me several doctor's appointments for a headache. I wonder how her husband and son do to support her but by force they must be used. As for their son, after greeting me he immediately went up to play in his room. I hope I don't have to coddle it anymore.

Finally, Myriam finished her speech. So I take the opportunity to slip away in my new room. It is quite simple: a bed, a desk and a wardrobe. At least that way I'm not out of place; the decoration is the same among all host families i.e. neutral and lifeless to remind you that you are only there for a limited time.

For God's sake, I can't wait to get out of here and join my friends.

After i throw my bag on the mattress, I go towards the window that looks out on to the neighbors'. Great, plus I would have to coddle the neighbors opposite. What a bad thing. I take the opportunity to light my cigarette while looking at what is happening in the neighbors but all I see is an overactive silhouette that gesticulates in all directions. Well, that's a promise!

Katy's point of view:

Tomorrow, a big day, it's my first year at university, I have to start preparing my business. This will prevent me from doing it tomorrow at the last minute and arriving late for my first day of class.

So I gather all my belongings when I see, through the open window of my room, movement in that of the neighbors. This is strange because usually there is never anyone in this room. He is certainly a new resident; I understand they are foster families.

Discreetly I'll see who it is but as soon as I get near my window I make a good back. There's a guy there; sitting on the window sill with a cigarette in his mouth.

Obviously he saw me and smiled at me provocatively while greeting me with the hand holding his cigarette. As I am a polite girl I greet him in turn while throwing him a shy little smile. I was definitely not waiting to see someone right in front of me, just a few yards away, and he took me by surprise.

Someone seems to call him because he turns around to talk and then throws his cigarette out before smiling insolently and turning around. Seconds later, it completely disappeared. Well what a meeting!

"Katherine," shouts my mother, so i'm startled again at the table.

"I'm coming," I said as I went down the stairs to go to dinner.

I sit at the table in front of my parents while thinking about this boy. He seemed to be my age, I guess he's probably going to college just like me.

"You will never guess who is coming to settle in with the neighbors," I began.

-Who, then? asks my curious mother.

When it comes to gossip, my mother always answers.

- Definitely a new boarder, I saw them just now, he seems to be the same age as me.

"Ah," sniffs my contemptuous mother, another little thug whom the neighbors will house. I hope it will not cause any problems like the other girl they had welcomed into their home. I'm not going to miss that one, I guess she's in the house now. Good riddance.

"He looked friendly," I said.

- Yes, well don't get too close to him. After all we don't know his past, it's better to be careful. Understood, Katherine?

- Yes, Mommy.

Apparently the discussion ends there. My father, on the other hand, has no complaints about it, but he is not interested in neighbourhood gossip.

After dinner, I go straight to my room as I approach the window to find that the room opposite is plunged into darkness. Too bad, it's not today that I'm going to see this new neighbor again.
