THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON

CURSED WITH INSATIABLE CURIOSITY and a tragically stultified mind, Rola found herself undoubtedly suspiciously pressed up against the wall separating the deserted hall and the DataCrux. Due to the late hour, few roamed the quarters at these times; most were away on business or at home with their families. Rola had none of either to attend to and neither did Commander Yon-Rogg who was to be found on the opposing side of the hallway, speaking to the hologram displaying a certain Kree character. Yon-Rogg's valued service was commended by his superior, Ronan the Accuser as he was known throughout the Empire, which put certain ease to Rola's sharp mien. Although it was not her toil that was extolled, she knew with conviction that she was part of the reason – alongside her fellow Starforce team members – her commander received praise, and that was enough for herself. She knew with every bone in her body Yon-Rogg would pass on the message of success later on.

Something that rippled her chain of thoughts was when Ronan spoke of the infamous light-speed engine. It was not a topic Rola's military expertise nor her restricted insight permitted her much knowledge on said engine, still, she had heard stories, and as she now heard talk of how she would be partaking in a mission to retrieve this technology elevated her some. From what she could gather in her prying, Rola understood this meant a trip to a planet known as C-53. Ronan mentioned a lesser lifeform inhabiting the planet and once she heard it too sheltered a national traitor, she found herself getting excited.

In the DataCrux the call ended and Rola made her entrance known, saluting her commander.

Commander Yon-Rogg tasted Rola's name and offered her his attention with curiosity. "What business have you here?"

His words sounded spiking, but Rola knew he meant no offense. Curt and never hiding a single thing, it simply was his way. In all the time Rola had known Yon-Rogg he had never portrayed himself to be anything but frank, believing it silly to waste surplus time on prattle when there were wars going on. That she could respect, still she scoffed and pursed a smirk his way.

"None, really. Just passing," said she, shrugging her shoulders.

Yon-Rogg's head bopped in response with a hum. Then he drew in a sharp breath and went to the panel of controls. "Well, I just finished with Ronan. He's pleased with the result of our latest success. Has a new mission for the team."

"Spare a rudimentary briefing?" Rola quizzed with an alluring gaze and so he did, walking her through the basics of their next undertaking.

. . .

MAR-VELL WAS THE TARGET. That was what was known to the team. Yon-Rogg's task was to retrieve the core of the light-speed engine. Ronan's orders sounded crude to Yon-Rogg, posing it as a challenge to test his worth of recent upgrade in rank. Contrary to tradition, this mission served in the ultimate distinction for rather than retrieve the goal and prove egalitarianism in an orthodox way, this target was to be eliminated. Shot and killed on sight. Conventionally, this task would be handed to one of the snipers brought along, however, once the aircraft had shot down that of the famed Kree scientist and apostate, Mar-Vell, Yon-Rogg insisted to be the one to make the shot. Why Rola had no idea and while she was left bewildered and questioning what exactly the rationale for her presence was, she sat back with Denn-Zel and Una in the Helion on planet C-53 as her circumspect leader and her coeval Minn-Erva embarked.
