They are always there.

Always.

You think you're safe in your warm, comfortable house. You know that the monsters you hear about are "creepy" or "scary" but you know they're not real. Every paranormal movie you've seen, every urban legend you've read, every campfire story you've been spooked by. These stories have been designed to scare you. Somebody has spent time and money, making sure you get spooked. Right?

None of them are real. The monsters.

Ghosts aren't there.

But they are.

Always.

They are what lives in every household.

Scuttling around, dragging their disfigured bodies to your room. Under your bed. Into your wardrobe.

Watching you.

Always.

The time they like to watch you most is when you lie, alone in your room at night. When you might not notice one smiling down at you from the ceiling or on the end of your bed. Even on your pillow, right next to your head. When any noise that is made you will assume is the house settling.

They are the glint of light in your mirror at night. The shadow you see but quickly forget about. That uncomfortable feeling of being watched you get when you're alone.

They prefer to stay in the dark corners. The unused attics and basements.

They will try to get people sometimes. Whilst a person sleeps. Cover their mouth so they can't scream, grab onto a part of their body and attempt to take them. It'll usually fail though. You're living proof. Remember that time you woke with the dry mouth? The dead arm?

Usually though, they prefer just to watch. And somehow, somewhere they always are.

Always.

So go on.

Take a look under the chair you sit on. At the space between your drawers and the wall. At the gap in between the floorboards, the crack in the ceiling.

See it?

Of course not.

It's gone.

It knew you were reading this, all of them do.

Especially the one smiling over your shoulder.
