I looked around for it, feeling like I was either going more crazy or I had finally gotten rid of him. I chuckled, and it ramped up quickly into full blown laughter. I looked down to the ground out of joy.
"Finally! Finally rid of that pesky reptile!" I yelled out shamelessly, as my mother could do nothing but look on.
"Ethan. Ethan!" She yells out, and I look back with a gigantic smile on my face. "It's gone!" I tell her, laughing. This went on for a few minutes until I inevitably calmed down to how I was before. I entered the house as if nothing had happened, and I had realized I gave my mother a scare. "Ethan what the hell was that?!" She yelled at me while I started unboxing our property. I looked back. "Oh... do you remember the chameleon from a while ago? Well, he had stuck around but I had said nothing. The exocrism didn't work, but now? After a year he's finally gone." I say, trying not to go into another fit of laughter. She was stunned at this news. I kept unboxing more things and placing them where I thought they belonged while my mother tried to choose the right words to say. "How... why didn't you say anything?!" She asks, concerned. "Do we need to book another psychiatrist?"
I looked back at her dead in her eyes, i had placed my glasses down. "Does it look like I want another session where I'm not getting anything done?!" I hiss, getting back to unpacking. She sighed, and followed suit. It took a few hours but we had finally gotten most of the complicated ones done. We managed to prop up all the furniture too, with little communication. It was probably because of how I yelled at her earlier. My eye and the chameleon always were... always had been a touchy subject. She was just worried about me. The doctors most likely assumed the exorcism was a placebo that locked away the horrible experience, unaware of my lie. I sat down on the couch, letting out a sigh of relief. My mom tossed me the remote, but I wasn't ready. But, like magic, something caught it. It looked like the chameleon's hand, outstretched holding the remote. I thought I had gotten rid of it. I grabbed for it but it retracted back, to my hand and slid in like I had caught it by myself. This led me with a worryingly amount of questions. Did the chameleon demon fuse with me for fighting back? Why did it help me if so? Is it in my body? Did my mom see that? I glanced to my mom who was reading a book. I gulped. I then heard a voice. "Remember... Ryohei Higashikata's house. I want to see who's there." The chameleon said creepily into my ear. It felt like the voice was resonating through my entire body. I stifled upchucking my lunch from not that long ago, as I felt my eye shaking. I looked back to my mother who was still reading her piece of literature. "M-Mom?" I asked. Was this thing coming back and sticking to me born from sin? Was it because of my horrid attitude directed towards her? New thoughts and questions came almost as soon as they left, leaving me dumbfounded and scared to my core, which I assumed is where he was now as he had melded into my arm, and presumably the rest of my body. "Yes dear?" She asks, looking up from it. "I'm... sorry about earlier when I yelled at you." I confessed with fear. It came across as sheepishly to her. "Oh. Oh my boy, it's fine. I understand you have a lot of pent up energy from... the incident... and I know it's a very touchy subject. I just wish your father was here to help..." she whispered that last part, but I heard it loud and clear. My father was gone before I was born. He died of cancer. I never got to meet him, or even see his face. "..." i was silent, putting my glasses on. "And I know dad's a touchy subject for you too. If everything's all unpacked and done here, I'll be heading off." I say, reaching for the door. She grabbed my arm, grabbing my attention. "Be safe out there." My mom always said that to me, she would never let me go out without those four words. I guess she didn't say 'don't trust strangers' this time because practically everyone was a stranger, and I could use some new friends. "And school starts in a few days. I already got your uniform ready and all, along with your supplies. I'll wake you up in the morning." She says before opening the door for me. "Now go out there and have fun."
I was able to leave the house now, walking across the street when I heard some honking. "Hey get out the way dumbass!" A man said. It was a speeding car, and there was no way I could escape. Seconds slowed down to hours, minutes to days, hours to what felt like years. I felt... horrible. I didn't want to lose anything else. I braced for the collision, not accepting this fate. I caught a glimpse of green before the impact, however. The chameleon was back, and had planted a hand into the car, launching us up and over the vehicle. I was petrified from what had occured, and I was thinking of what to do as a kid with one eye and no legs. It was a roofless car, giving me more advantage to skim by this without any injury whatsoever. I fell onto the other side, looking at the car. I saw the chameleon arm going back to me. I thought I was going insane. The man ran out of the car, looking at me. "What the hell, kid? You're damn crazy! You should be glad you're not hurt!" He yells out, grabbing me by the collar. He seemed only a bit older than me, just barely able to drive. At least I assumed that. I was pissed. Most people would just say sorry and move on, happy to be alive. "Sorry, you better watch your mouth to someone you almost killed." I say, baring my teeth at him. He twitched and threw me to the ground. The creature came back. "Take this! Shining Eye!" It says, grabbing my glasses and throwing them back. He melded back into me, keeping my eye open. The pressure came back. I could feel it building in my eye, like an explosion waiting to happen. The man retched. "What's wrong with your eye, brat?! Where did it-" he was cut off bye a beam that shot out my iris. "SHINING EYE! BEAM REFOCUS!" I hear the annoyance say. It bent around the man, shooting past him. It bent snugly around his neck, if it had not miraculously bent around him his windpipe would have a new hole in it. It was a brilliant yellow, an Aureolin streaking across the sky. I felt my eye tensing up, as the man screamed and ran back into his car, driving away. It wouldn't stop, so I had to cover up my eye. While trying to do so, I had carved up my hand a bit with the laser. It stopped after a while, and I had placed back on my glasses. "What... what the hell was that?" I asked, the chameleon had gone out of my body, looking at me. I considered him some sort of alien, demon or ghost at this point. "That was me, or rather, you." He says, as I look into my hands. "No, what did you do to me?" I asked, my hands shaking. The blood from the carved up blast shook out in a line. He shrugged. "I only did what I was made to do." He says, phasing back into me. I swatted where he entered, scared. "His house.... his house." I heard, feeling insane. I wondered if that would make him leave me alone. I went home and covered up the wound with some gauze as it was bleeding fast, and I walked up to the house, knocking on the door. "Hello? Ryohei?" I asked, and it opened up. "Oi? A kid? What're you doing here? You don't seem like a friend of Josuke's" A woman says, looking mad. "Oh. Uh, I actually came because of a... Ryohei Higashikata?" I asked. Her frown turned to a smile. "Oh? Why my father?" She asks. "Well, I'm new here and was wondering if he could tell me more about this town, he seems knowledgeable." I say, and she lets me in. I saw a man on a couch, drinking some brandy. "Ah, Mr Higashikata?" I ask. He almost jumps up. "Oh! You're that kid from before! Why are you here?" He asks. They couldn't know about the chameleon so I told him exactly what I told the woman. "Ah, yes." He says. Mr Higashikata places his drink down when there was some thumping upstairs. "Oi, Josuke! Get down here!" Ryohei said, smiling back at me. "Well, what'd you like to know?" He asks.
I shuffled awkwardly. "Uhm... the history of this town, its crimes, etcetera etcetera." I say. "Are you familiar with gore?" I ask, taking off my glasses and showing him my eye socket. He didn't seem phased, and if he somewhat was, that would be it. "I had an incident when I was young. I lost my eye and the man had a heart attack as well as a stab wound. I just wanted to make sure I'm safe in this town." I put the glasses back on, waiting for his response. He thought for a second when someone had come down. "What do you want, gramps?" A boy had asked. "Ah, Josuke. There you are. This is a new boy that lives just across the street, he may go to your school as well." He says. "Is that so?" Josuke asks, sitting down. "You may already know this, but I'm Josuke Higashikata." He tells to me, hand outstretched to shake mine. "Ethan. Ethan Nozeboze. I moved here just today." I say, shaking it. I halted for a second. I thought I saw something pink, and the chameleon left me. "There it is!" He says, and I look back. Josuke looked up and was taken aback. "What the hell is that?" He asked, and I looked back at him. "Uh... what's what?" I asked, able to act incredibly well. Josuke pointed right at the chameleon. "That! Didn't you hear it speak?!" He yells. I looked at the chameleon as it waved to me, deciding I had to continue with this fakery. "I dunno what you're talking about, you ok?" I asked as the chameleon hid under the sofa I was sitting on and melded through it to me. The pink thing came back and punched the green chameleon's tail before it went behind though, and I held back a scream as it had somehow also bashed the back of my leg. I was panicking at this moment. "I don't see anything else either." Said Ryohei. Josuke frowned, turning it into a smile. "Ah... never mind. I guess I'm just seeing things." He says, looking away. I knew he saw the chameleon, and it unsettled me as much as it did him. How? After that, I was able to have a chance to talk with Josuke's grandfather Ryohei, and he told me about everything. Josuke left midway through back to his room. I was able to learn of all the criminals from the past. I hears about a bust he did of someone named "Angelo". He felt familiar and disgusting. He reminded me of the man that took my eye and died from an arrow. "Well, thank you officer. I'll be seeing you." I tell him. I get up off the couch and walk out, going home. But did Josuke really see that demon? What was the pink thing I saw? A million thoughts started a marathon in my mind, leaving me with my thoughts while I came home. My mom had prepared some instant ramen from the store, a quick dinner as she didn't want to cook that night. I went to bed shortly after. The chameleon came out. "Did you see him too? It was like a diamond, piloted by some crazy kid." He said to me. "Please, be quiet. I'm trying to sleep." I say. "Don't demons like you ever sleep?""No rest for the wicked. Did you ever wonder what I really am? What if I'm just you, or a figment of your imagination? Or what... if I'm just a demon that'll rip your throat out in your sleep."
I didn't sleep until he left that night.
