The Walk

As I walked out the door, the rain was coming down pretty good, so I pulled up my hood. As I walked past the houses in my neighborhood I noticed there were a lot of kids playing outside even though it was raining.

When I reached the end of my street, I saw the house. The corner house where the main road and my neighborhood road met.  The one that always creeped me out whenever I had to walk by it or whenever my family and I drove by it.   It was painted a mossy green color, and had black shutters. There were some missing roof shingles here and there, and the coat of paint had started to dry up, crack, and peel. It would only take a little fixing up and it would look like a new house!

I picked up my pace when the corner house was to the right side of me. Just as I got by it I thought I heard someone's shuffle of feet. I took a quick glance to my right at the house, and for just a split second, I thought I saw a yellow tinted part of someone from the waist up peeking through an open window at me. I stopped in surprise and looked again at the window for a minute. They were gone. "I'll be sure to remember that, just in case anything else weird goes on here." I said to myself. And I kept walking.

I got to the center of my town, where all the convience stores and restaurants were, and I decided I wanted to go to the local subshop.  I crossed the street, and walked in.  There weren't that many people there for a Saturday, and the person behind the counter was ready for me so I ordered what I wanted.  "And do you want that for here or to go?" the man behind the counter asked.  "To go, please." I replied.  I also got a small fountain drink.  I ate my lunch in the shop, though.  I ate it there to avoid having to walk past the corner house again so soon.

I had finished up my lunch after half an hour.  I threw out my wrappers and empty cup and headed back home.  The rain had stopped coming down as hard now.  I crossed the street again to get to the side of the road that my house was on.  I got to the turn that goes from the main road onto my neighborhood road.  This time the corner house was on my left, and once again, I thought I saw something looking out at me, but through a different window this time.  The basement window, which was level with the ground. When I stopped and looked again, once again, it was gone!  This time though, I was intrigued.  It didn't look like anyone was home, so I walked across the lawn to where I thought I saw the second figure.  As I approached the dark, lower window, I'll admit, I was nervous.  Snap!  The sound of a twig breaking underneath my shoe.  I stopped and tensed up at the sudden noise then noticed the broken stick.  Then I continued getting closer.  I drew near to the window, bent down, and looked in.

I moved my head around to get different angles on the basement of the house, and I saw it just looked like a regular basement.  What I saw next I will never, ever forget.  When I moved to the right side of the window, I saw a big, pale yellow face with tinted red eyes and a huge, eerie smile.  From the quick look I got at it, I could tell it didn't look human.  "Holy shit!" I gasped.  I jumped up and stumbled backwards and fell landing on the broken twig from earlier.  "Ow, crap!" I said.  I quickly got up, turned around, and ran as fast as I could out of there.  As I was running away, I heard a husky voice say "You don't know what you're getting into..."
