"GET OUT OF MY WAY," Taryn said, shoving past a group of second years. She was running late to Defense Against the Dark Arts, and she knew that Umbridge would not let her get away with that. "Can't be late again, alright?"
"We won't be late," Cam chided, checking her watch that always happened to be around her wrist. "We still have two minutes before the class starts!"
"Yes, but that's halfway across the freaking school, Cam," Taryn said, practically running at this point with Carina trailing behind her. "And Umbridge will have our heads if we're late. You've seen the toad!"
"Good point," Cam breathed, trying to keep up with her long-legged, quick walking best friend.
The two opened the large wooden door just as Carina's watch clicked to 1:00, signaling that it was time for them to be in class and time for them to be seated already. Both girls were panting heavily as Umbridge gave them a look.
"I presume you two won't be late for my class again, correct?" Umbridge said, her very annoying toad personality shining through.
"Yes, Professor Umbridge." The two voiced simultaneously, Taryn not even sort of hiding her annoyance with both herself and her teacher.
There were only two seats left in the room, as everyone had been there on time except for the two girls, and Taryn found herself looking around as quickly as possible for the best seat left. Either Draco Malfoy or Neville Longbottom. That was an easy answer.
"Sorry, Cam," She whispered as she quickly sat in the seat next to Draco Malfoy.
Draco sniggered at the two, and Taryn nudged him hard with her elbow. He glared at her, and the brunette just grinned.
"Now that everyone's arrived," Umbridge started, sending Maddie and Taryn looks. "Well, good afternoon!"
Only a few kids murmured a 'good afternoon' in reply, neither Taryn or Draco being one of them.
"Tut, tut," Umbridge said, seemingly annoyed. Who says 'tut-tut' out loud? "That won't do, now will it? I should like you, please, to reply, 'Good afternoon, Professor Umbridge.' One more time, please. Good afternoon, class!"
"Good afternoon, Professor Umbridge," the class chanted back, Taryn rolling her eyes at the blonde beside her.
"There, now," Umbridge said in a sickly sweet tone. "That wasn't too difficult, was it? Wands away and quills out, please."
Many of the students in the class shared annoyed and gloomy looks: why wouldn't they use their wands in one of the most hands-on classes in all of Hogwarts? But they all abided, some students like Taryn rather begrudgingly, and stuck their wands in their bags and exchanged them for their quills.
Umbridge opened her handbag and grabbed her incredibly short wand - "So she can have her nasty wand but we can't have ours?" Taryn whispered to Draco, who snickered under his breath - and tapped it on the blackboard sharply. Words appeared at once: Defense Against the Dark Arts - A Return to Basic Principals.
"Well now, your teaching in this subject has been rather disrupted and fragmented, hasn't it?" Stated Umbridge, turning to face the class with her wrinkled hands clasped in front of her. "The constant changing of teachers, many of whom have not seemed to follow the Ministry Approved curriculum, has unfortunately resulted in you being rather below the standard we would expect to see in your O.W.L year. You will be pleased to know, however, that these problems are now to be rectified. We will be following a carefully structured, theory-centered, Ministry Approved course of magical defense this year. Copy down the following, please."
