OC relationships:

Your OC is important and since we've gotten your characters out of the way, I think now it is important to discuss the characters that we all know and love. Writing every TWD character into your fanfic is different and it all depends on the dynamic they have with your OC.

Characters on TWD are all very complex, especially Daryl. It's important that your OC's dynamic with a character is understandable and makes sense. If your OC is supposed to be in love with Daryl, they might not like Carol but you can't just have your OC randomly have a thing against Carol. Carol is an amazing character and you can't hate someone like that without reasons. There should be some sort of conflict that the OC has with Carol whether it be emotionally, mentally, or physically. This applies to all characters, Daryl and Carol are just one example. The same could be said about a dynamic between OC/Rick/Lori or even OC/Rick/Shane.

Your OC's dynamics with other characters depends on the relationships your OC has with other characters.

Writing preexisting characters:

This is a very difficult thing to help someone understand or do. Every TWD character has had their identity made on TWD. In fanfic it's important to maintain a lot of that identity, however your fanfic is your work. You really can do what you would like. Follow the simple or complex ideas of a character but you can change certain things for them to work in your story, consistency is key. If you make a TWD character act a certain way in your fanfic make sure that their actions/personality is consistent to how you've created it. However this doesn't mean that the character becomes your own, you have to stay true to what that character represents. Their morals and values should be rather consistent between the show and fanfiction.

Tips for using complex characters in fanfiction:

Characters like Daryl are very complex and can often be hard to portray into your fanfic. Here are some tips that might be helpful (some new and some previously mentioned)

( ) Be consistent when changing things

( ) Morals and values create the purest form of a character, change as little of those to seem as authentic as possible

( ) Look at examples of how other people wrote a character, this can give you an idea of what seems to work and what doesn't work for a certain character in fanfiction

( ) Use character dynamics, dynamics with an OC can change a character so make sure you create the right kind of dynamic for what you want

Overall:

A fanfiction is your story, you're the one telling it so tell it how you want. Create strong and purposeful dynamics between your OC and other characters to make it easier to write characters how you want.

Since every character is very unique and there are lots of specific ideas/rules that should be followed when writing them, would you guys like to see individual chapters for certain characters and how to write them? If so, let us know who you'd want to see first!
