Vic's POV:
The rope slid easily through my fingers like it had done thousands of times before. I pulled tightly, not stopping when I heard the light gasp from the boy in front of me. He stayed crouched down in the corner of the room. He wasn't trying to get away from me, no not him, not Oliver. He never tried to run. He just didn't want the ropes again.
"Vic, you don't have to do this anymore." He said, but I didn't listen.
I looked up at his brown eyes. His dark hair was falling into them again. He was long overdue for a haircut. He was looking at me pleadingly, just like every time. I finished tying the ropes securely and let go.
"You know you can trust me. I won't run. I never have." He said.
"I wish it were that simple, Oliver. I can't take any risks, you know that." I told him.
I lightly touched his cheek and smiled at him. He was so obedient. He had been since the moment I found him. I had once trusted someone in the past and it didn't turn out well for me, or for him. I couldn't take any chances again, no matter how sure I was that they wouldn't run.
"I just have a few things to pick up from the store and I'll be back before you know it." I told him.
"Be careful. You know we're too close." He said.
He was right. We were close. Close to the town where most cops and towns-folk were on the lookout for me. It had been a couple of years though. Surely they'd have forgotten about me by now. It was risky being here, but I had to come back. It was the four year anniversary of Kellin's death. I couldn't stay away even if I tried.
"I've stayed undetected for this long. I'll be back." I assured Oliver.
I leant forward and kissed his soft lips. He kissed me back in adoration. That was what made him so much easier than the others. He adored me, and I adored him too. We clicked with each other from day one and he made the most progress every day. He was a perfect replacement.
I left Oliver in the basement. I was lucky to find this house. It was hidden away in the middle of nowhere and by the looks of it had been abandoned for years. It was a dilapidated old house, but the basement was perfect.
I pulled my hood over my head as I left. I didn't feel like I needed it though. No one would remember me. It bothered me that people were after me in the first place. I just wanted to be left alone to my business.
Things had been going smoothly since Oliver, despite the fact his father was a detective and looking for him. Oliver constantly asked me to let him go so he could tell everyone he actually wanted to be with me, but I had trust issues. I wouldn't let him leave. I couldn't lose someone again.
I trekked through the woods until I got to the car I had stolen not too long ago. It was small and quiet which was just what I needed. I hopped in, started it up and drove until I was close enough to town that I could walk the rest of the way. It had been years since I was back here. I'd get in and out quickly without being recognized. I had done it before and I'd do it again.
I made my way to a small corner store. It was new. I had never been there before, so I hoped the owners were new to town too. When I went inside and scanned the place, I didn't recognize the cashier. That was a good sign. I kept my head down as I gathered enough food in a basket to last a couple of weeks.
I paid the cashier the crumpled up money I had pick-pocketed a few days ago. It was hard to get by these days. It wasn't like I could go out and get a job. I did the best with what I had. The cashier was a friendly woman who smiled at me warmly, not knowing she was smiling at a fugitive.
