Chapter 2: After
After the funeral, Zain was taken by her Aunty. Melba welcomed her niece to her house. Melba lived in the country side, an hour from the city. She has a small farm. She’s 48 but she lives alone. She never marries again. Her husband, a soldier, died in Afghanistan 20 years age. Though, his remains were never seen, the military announced that he is already dead.
She’s happy to take care of Zain. She’s happy to have Zain as a daughter. Though, she could just search for Zain’s father and give the custody to him, she doesn’t want to. She knows how Shirley never wanted Zain to meet her father and that even Zain tries to understand her mother and doesn’t press on the idea about her father more.
Zain also was more than happy to be away from the city. She hated it how everyone on the city that knows her mother will look at her with pity in their eyes. But they didn’t know that Zain’s strong. She didn’t want pity for she believed that it’s her destiny. Everything happens for a reason.
Jeremiah 29:11
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
And she always knew that Shirley wouldn’t leave her side that she is in her heart forever.
