Lan Zhan glanced at the figure next to him, who was still asleep and far from waking up. His lips unconsciously twitched up at the sight of a smile on his husband's face, glad he was having a happy dream. Seeing how peaceful Wei Ying's slumber was, he rose quietly, making sure he made as little movement as possible. While getting dressed in his gown, he heard a movement from behind him and felt two tender arms wrap around his waist before feeling warm lips on his neck. Grabbing the two hands, he turned around to see the love of his life, hair messy and half asleep. He chuckled slightly and urged Wei Ying to get dressed so they could leave the inn and set out as soon as possible.

"Lan Zhannn, let me enjoy a few more moments of peace with you."

"..."

"Please?"

"..."

"Okay okay, I'll get dressed."

Lan Zhan chuckled as he watched Wei Ying put his robes on. Eighteen years later, and he still had the same attitude from the first time they met; joking around and doing his utmost with cheekily getting his way out of things.

After a few minutes, both of them had put own their clothes and picked up their weapons; Lan Zhan with Bichen and Wei Ying with Chenqing.  Hand in hand, they walked down the stairs of the shabby inn. A few travellers eating breakfast had recognised them, despite neither being in their usual apparel. In response to being addressed as "Hanguang-Jun" and "Yiling Patriarch", they smiled at each other and ignored the commentators. Paying the overnight fee, they walked out onto the busy streets where stalls were spread throughout the streets, each selling their own specialties.

In a blink of a second, Lanzhan felt a gush of wind beside him and saw Weiying headed for a stall across the street.

"Lanzhan! Lanzhan! Come here and look at this!"

Lanzhan let out a chuckle no louder than a mouse and shook his head, entertained at how childish his husband was. Saying nothing in response, he headed over to the stall. Out of the hundreds of things he expected to see, a tablet mimicking the Gusu Lan Sect's 3000 rules was not one. Despite not showing it physically, he was quite amused at the poor quality carving on the stone with rules that were nowhere near as close to being the ones from the Lan Sect.

Looking over, another item also caught his attention: a forehead ribbon that replicated, again, the Gusu Lan Sect's. He picked it up and a sudden flood of memories came back. Although slightly blurry, he could faintly remember the details of the first time he was drunk and refused to let Weiying touch his forehead ribbon. Yet, skip a few weeks, and he himself tied his forehead ribbon around Weiying's wrist, connected to his own wrist.

He was snapped out of his thought process by the stall owner's voice, asking if he was interested in purchasing anything. Remembering the tight budget they had, he shook his head politely. He opened his mouth to urge Weiying to leave but saw him smiling at something; a pair of jade rabbit ornaments. Subconsciously, Lanzhan, too, smiled at the sight of the rabbits, an animal significant to him and Weiying. Taking the jade ornaments out of Weiying's hands, he asked the stall owner for the price and paid the fees without hesitation. He hooked one around his cultivational partner's belt, and one around his own.

With the whole process taking no longer than a few seconds, Weiying had no time to process what happened before he felt a weight on his belt. Finally reacting to the situation, he reprimanded Lanzhan for recklessly spending their money on something that would neither warm them nor fill their hunger. Yet, the small smile on Weiying's face suggested otherwise.

a/n: hey! this is the first mdzs fanfic ive written so i hope its been enjoyable so far! please let me know if there are any errors that i should correct and ill edit accordingly! i currently dont have an update schedule but im aiming for around two-three updates a week.

side note: weiying and lanzhan no longer wear their usual white and black outfits as they are now wandering the world free of worries and ties to their previous sect (which means lan zhan doesnt have his forehead ribbon). however, they do still keep their weapons (bichen and chenqing) by their sides for the sake of defence.

even after thirteen years, i still love you | MDZSWhere stories live. Discover now
