I dropped my arm from around him, and I lifted my chin to look at him. He looked down at me, and the hand he had been stroking my hair with, he moved to under my chin, cupping my face. His thumb aimlessly brushed against my jawline, sending chills through my body. "We'll figure this out," he murmured, and I nodded, believing him. He added with a small smile, catching me off guard as he spoke and smirked, "Go to prom with me, then we can really dance."
Rolling my eyes, I pushed away from him, forcing him to let go of me. A small smile formed on my lips. Within an instant, he was back to his normal self. I laughed and spoke, "Were you attempting to impress me this whole time just to get me to go with you? Prom must not be exciting for someone as old as you are."
"Did it work? It would be exciting if you were there with me," he replied quickly, taking a step closer to me, my back against one of the trees.
Before I could regret my answer, I replied, "Fine."
He blinked twice, his eyes widening. "Really?" he asked. He looked a bit shocked.
"Don't make me change my mind," I spoke, looking at him seriously. I stepped around him, standing in the open area of the wood and placing my hands on my hips. A smirk appeared on my lips as I watched him.
Turning to face me, he seemed to weigh his options. He took a few steps toward me, closing the distance between us again. Before he could convince himself otherwise, he placed both of his hands on either side of my face, and he pressed his lips against mine. His kiss was gentle, his lips soft as they touched mine. I closed my eyes, allowing it to happen. I could feel the energy rolling off of him, it danced and ebbed between where we touch. As he pulled away, he put his forehead against mine and whispered, "I won't disappoint you, Elizabeth."
I opened my eyes and met his blue-violet gaze. "If you're trying to impress me today, Clark, it's working," I returned softly.
As much as I wanted to deny how I felt around him, I couldn't. It was like every moment was one of excitement. His presence was the only thing I wanted, and when he was gone I craved him more. I knew it was insane to feel how I felt in only such a short amount of time, but I couldn't stop my emotions from running rabid. I could feel the quick thumping of my heart in my chest and the warm feeling crawling across my body, my whole-body tingling.
I inclined my head forward, closing my eyes as I pecked my lips against his, taking a step away from him. He dropped his hands and watched me quietly, and I started walking in the wood again. I crossed my arms over my chest, my cheeks feeling warm with what had happened only a few moments before. I placed one of my fingers against my lips, shaking my head as the corner of my lip turned up.
The black fur I had seen earlier caught my eye again. It was quick, flashing before my eyes. I staggered a few steps back as it passed in front of me, and I knocked into Clark's chest. My breath caught in my throat as I whispered, "There it was again."
