It had been over a week and I had all but completely forgotten about applying to be on the bachelor until I answered my phone and the person on the other end introduced them-self as:
"Jack Romanov, host of the Youtube Red bachelor series"
"Oh... Oh! Hi! What's up..?" I responded, my heart beating rapidly, eager to find out what he was calling for.
I couldn't have been selected... could I?"Is this Valentine Hale?" the host asked.
"This is she" I responded.
"Great! I have some awesome news! We've reviewed thousands and thousands of applications and we think you'd be great to have compete on the show!" he told me, excitedly.
I gulped. "Can you please give me one minute?" I said as I put down my phone on my kitchen counter and took a few steps away to think.
I never thought this would happen, otherwise I would have thought if further through. I wanted so badly to tell them no, and carry on with my normal life, but every fibre of my being was urging me to do it. To say yes. I hadn't even thought of what I would tell my parents, or my brother. I was 20 and as I said, would be the last person you'd expect to do anything like this. What would they think of me? Did it matter what anyone thought of me if I was getting a unique experience so many girls would kill for. Not to mention just a life experience, and an opportunity to travel to and live in California for 2 months. My mind was made up.
I went back to the kitchen and picked up the phone again.
"Hello?" I said.
"Hi Valentine! What are you thinking?" Jack Romanov asked me "You want to do it?"
I took a deep breath, "Yes, I do. I want to do it" I said smiling.
"Great! You seem a little jittery, Valentine?" he inquired.
"I've never done something like this before" I told him, "Also, I go by Val" I informed him
"By Val, eh? You know, that gives me an idea," he said, "if it would make you more comfortable, you could go by a fake name on screen." he told me.
That did make me more comfortable, for some reason. I guess I just didn't want my name associated with the Bachelor, regardless if my face was.
"Sounds good!" I said.
"I'll email you the details, see you in a few days in California, Emma Reid!" he said before hanging up.And just like that, I became Emma Reid, a contestant on the first season of the YouTube Bachelor spinoff in which the bachelor was none other than James Rallison. TheOdd1sOut.
