A voice is heard in the darkness. “Life has always been an unpredictable phenomenon. Once you give something the freedom of choice and combine it with emotions, it will never cease to surprise you. With the right timing and quantities, this will make an endless supply of entertainment. I have no regret of this decision.” I look around, trying to find the source of the voice, but all I saw was the never-ending void around me. “you are not going to find a vessel, if that is what you are searching for. Only when the time is right you will be able to perceive me.” His honey-like voice replied to a question that wasn’t asked. I walked into a random direction, trying to find anything. “who are you?” I ask, trying to assess the situation. “something you wouldn’t even be able to wrap your small little head around. A better question is: who are you?” I hear the voice chuckle. “answer me!” I demanded. The darkness started to light up. “soon.” The voice said.
I woke up to the sound of cars on the highway outside my house. I glanced over to the clock. 7:14. Still on time. I dreamily got out of bed, changing my red pyjamas for a pair of black pants and my favourite blue blouse. After walking to my bathroom I brush my teeth and did my shoulder length brown hair up in a bun while doing a staring contest with my own blue eyes in the mirror. After pouring some hot coffee in a thermos can, I walk to my car. I tiredly drive onto the highway. While driving I review what I have to do when I get to work. “first, review some of the cases in the conference room. Second, check my email. No wait, first email, then conference. After the conference I’m to be on phone duty until six. If there won’t be any casualty’s, that is. Gosh, working for the police is unpredictable as heck.” I take a sip of my coffee and wince. “hot!”
I walk to my desk after greeting the man at the entrance. I open my email and start scrolling through. “robbery, another robbery, etc…. oh? A cult has formed in the liral district? That’s that one small town nearby new York right? Sounds interesting.” “could you keep it down?” a man next to me says, clearly looking sleep-deprived. Probably worked the nightshift. “oh, sorry sir.” I looked at my keyboard. “the conference is about to start, will all people mentioned come to the conference room?” after that, a list of names sounded through the office. “Carl Spielberg, Tony Hailstone, Calypso Rivor.” when I heard my own name, Calypso, I stood up and walked to the room that was specified.
“so! If I’m correct, you all got the email about the cult in liral. Apparently the police in new York are too busy to deal with it, so they requested us, the Washington police, to send some of our people to investigate. He looked at the three of us. “all three of you have been chosen to investigate. You will be needed to infiltrate the town and earn the trust of the civilian’s for one month. any information regarding the case will be given to me directly. We have already rented three apartments. You are to be there tomorrow at 8 am, am I clear?” I nodded. “crystal clear sir!” after leaving the room, I walked back to my desk. an undercover case. They probably chose some minor cops so we didn’t need false identity’s. the Washington police is pretty keen on keeping stuff as cheap as possible. And a cult is probably not even that important either. Either way, I needed to go home and pack my stuff, so I was dismissed earlier than planned.
The sun coloured the sky a slight tint of yellow as it made preparations to light the other side of the globe. I finished packing what I needed, and loaded my bags into my car. I wasn’t really able to narrow it down, because I’m bad at choosing. As a result of that, my entire trunk and the back seats were filled with all the bags I could find, stuffed with objects that vary from kitchen knives to pillowcases. I’m glad they didn’t hire a truck to come, other ways I would have plundered my entire house. Since I needed to be there early In the morning, I planned to drive there during the night. It was a 4 hour drive after all. I was driving across the highway as the sun went down, the rich orange light reflecting on my sunglasses.
I arrived. Early. To early. 3 am to be exact. I did not think this through. Apparently leaving at 11 pm was a bad idea. Now, I’m in a town near new York, my car full with baggage, in the middle of the night. I should drive around for a bit, get myself accustomed with the environment. As I drive through the darkness of the night, slightly lit by the streetlights, I look around. The town mostly has pretty low buildings. From as far as I can see, the highest buildings are the apartment buildings of 5 stories high. There was a small forest with a lake in the middle at the edge of the town. I saw a blonde man taking a night stroll, probably admiring the neck of the woods. He appeared deep in thought
