MACK CALHOUN ONCE TRUSTED HERSELF to fall. Tenderly abandoned limbs dipping into the earth like butts of cigars into their ceramic coffins brimming with dulled stardust. That was until she was burned, frail collar bones hallowing to become ashtrays to those who reminded her of what she really was -- unwanted. She allowed her luminosity to be widdled until she was thin enough to slip through fingers, disappearing into false contentment long enough to convince herself it was home. But for a foster child, that word can often have an unfathomable bitterness to it.

She had found that bitterness in Hawkins, Indiana, hidden deep within a small, hand-built farm style home that contained two other kids just like her. Outcasts may as well have been written across their front door as the humble couple carrying the name of Calhoun decided to move against the grain of society. They kept the kids they fostered sheltered, throwing their giving arms around them in efforts to knit them into something more than just the undesired. Mack and her foster siblings were homeschooled, put to work, and loved. It was enough for them, but for the rest of the town, it was something much different. To the rest of Hawkins's the Calhouns were recluses who may have well been running for a cult for all they knew. So, for every month besides October, the town snickered and gossiped about the family when it was convenient for them. However, when they faced the Calhoun's during pumpkin picking season, it was all smiles and farse pleasantries that Lily and Andrew Calhoun mistook for the real thing. While Mack and her two foster siblings stood back and watched the sideways glances and sniggers leaving them to taste salt on their tounges.

Mack and the others make it a point to avoid the town, sinking deeper into a life consisting only of each other. But when the family's crops rot overnight and Mack is sent into town to report foul play to the chief of police, she finds a way to wash down the souring after tastes of judgment through a boy who's bite may just be more brutal.
