The Illusion of Fog

The dense fog was both a welcome and unwelcome sight. It provided us cover, but if we couldn't see our enemy, we could be walking into a trap. And I've had enough of those.

"We should be coming up on the outpost," Steve says from right behind me.

I hear something off to the left, and I'm instantly alert. "Stay here."

I'm deeper into the fog before he can argue. I keep low to the ground, the dark colors of my suit helping me stay out of sight. The noise continues to grow louder the further I move.

I'm quick to find myself in front a large group of Hydra soldiers. There had to be at least fifty of them.

I duck as two pass within ten feet of me. This mission could be much harder than predicted.

I turn on my heel and move back the way I came, quickly finding Steve, thankfully where I left him.

"What's wrong?" he asks, sensing something was off.

"At least fifty Hydra soldiers roughly a few hundred feet to our left. I think there is someone on the inside. From the information we got yesterday, they weren't heavily guarded."

"Damn it," I hear him mutter under his breath. "Think we should call it?"

"And give them more time to bring in more soldiers? I don't think so. We'll just have to be more cautious. Tell the others. I'm moving forward. Once the building is blown, the soldiers will scatter."

He nods in agreement and quickly warns the others, giving them a new plan of attack.

I feel him come up behind me, protecting my back from anyone unlucky enough to follow.

Soon, the small outpost comes into view.

It was also well-guarded.

I look to Steve and he nods, giving me the go ahead. I move away from the embankment and into the fray.

Something was off, that much I knew. These soldiers weren't doing a very good job at guarding the building, despite their number.

"Steve, we need to call this off," I whisper into the comm.

No answer.

"Steve?"

The sound of metal slamming against itself has me looking back towards where I left him. He was surrounded by men, all heavily armed.

I quickly scramble away from the building, ignoring the guards that quickly trail behind. I had to get back to him.

It really was a trap.

I scramble over the embankment, slipping in the dirt.

He was gone, but the sounds of a fight weren't far away. I was quick to follow, coming face-to-face with one of the heavily armed soldiers.

He swings for my jaw, but I duck, swiping my leg behind his and dropping him to his back, quickly drawing my gun and releasing a bullet into his skull.

Another one hits me from behind, throwing me off the dead Hydra goon. I roll to my feet, finding myself surrounded much like Steve was several feet away.

Guns were raised, orders shouted.

I look over, hoping to meet his eyes. It seems he had the same idea. With one quick look, I slam my foot into the face of an unlucky soldier, causing everything to spiral out of control.

It was punch, kick, roll, block, jab. Anything I could do to protect myself and help Steve.

"Everyone get to the rendezvous point, now!" I hear Steve shout over the comm.
