The use of the word "Gay"

So, earlier this afternoon I read a series of tweets from college friends talking about the use of the word gay in a demeaning or jesting sense. The main statement to gather was that they hate when people use the word gay as an insult.

Reasons why this is wrong:

1. Many homosexual people work very hard to come to terms and confess their sexuality. It is seen as disrespectful.
2. The fact that it is used as an insult presses the idea that being a homosexual is a bad thing. Which it very clearly is not a bad thing.

A rebuttal:

Ever since the late 00s and early 10s people have been using the word "Gay" as the new "lame" or "bogus" of the generation. As far as I know, this is not an insult directly to gay people, and after asking all the homosexual individuals that I know whether or not it offends them, the response is usually a glaring "no".

Why might it be this way? Well, often individuals of random backgrounds will choose to "hero up" and stand up for the minority. Which is great to do, but there are so many english words that have double meanings. Anither one relating to this would be "fag". Its a horrendous insult to an individual who has stuggled with these types of adversities, but it also can mean cigarette. Just as "gay" can mean "lame". Ive never seen it used as an insult to gay people, and I've personally never witnessed a gay person being insulted by this.
This rant basically boils down to, you shouldnt offer unnecessary help, and you shouldn't use slurs of any kind with malicious intent.
Like I said in my previous chapter about ethnicity, these words become different things when you take away the maliciousness of the words. It is simply more human and kind to do the right thing and not use it as an insult towards a person.
