I could visibly see the look of disgust written all over Phoenix King's face just at the thought of marring me and it was haunting me. Was I that undesirable? The contract said that Sianna and I had to move in with him if he signed the contract and that I had to be his personal assistant which means that I'll be seeing him and that pained expression a lot.

I left the dinner party before it even finished. I wasn't in the mood to eat dessert or socialize with those rich stuck-up pricks. I mean back in the day, men only sold off their daughters to become richer or to make themselves more powerful so why would this be any different? The King's are our mother company, so my best guess is that Mum and Dad want me to have some type of power or say so that the King's company will stop causing their company to be second best.

When I reached my shitty apartment, I sent through a text to Mum saying I felt ill and had to leave but to call me if the contract is going through. Throwing my phone on the makeshift coffee table, I gave Sianna a quick bath and put her in her warm and fluffy pajamas. It's tradition for me to read to Sianna until she falls asleep but tonight it was unnecessary because she fell asleep as soon as her tiny head touched her pillow.

Slowly and quietly, so I didn't wake Sianna up, I made my way into the bathroom to begin the difficult task of taking my make-up off with my dry make-up wipe. My face was a bright shade of red after I had finished and my skin was slightly sore and irritated from all the rubbing I had to go to get just the sheen foundation off. As I glanced into the crooked hanging mirror I had one of those random self-reflection moments where what I saw versus what I used to be was completely different.

A loud sigh escaped through my lips and I trudged off to lay on my small, uncomfortable mattress that creaked and groaned whenever the person laying on it made even the smallest of movements. As I lie awake, staring hopelessly up at my paint-cracked roof, my mind wandered back to earlier tonight where I caught Phoenix bend over, pick up and wipe off Sianna's spoon off the floor before placing it next to her bowl of half eaten tin spaghetti. It's rare to see somebody that barely knows a child to do something nice for them, so it makes me feel a little better about marrying Phoenix if he's nice to my baby.

                                                                                                    ...

The sunlight drifted through the thin, hole filled curtains and sat directly on my face, causing me to stir from my light slumber. I normally don't like to lay in bed for long but today I felt as if it was much needed because the sleep I had managed to get last night was interrupted every couple of hours because of my vivid nightmares about that stupid party three years ago.

My well needed nap was interrupted my the sound of my phone ringing from the lounge room, and because of last nights crazy events I couldn't just ignore it and call whoever it was back later. Throwing the light pile of blankets and sheets off me I scrambled to the coffee table where I had left my phone lying to find the person calling me none other than my least favourite people right now.

"Yes Mum?" I answered, my voice raspy and the tone sounding tired. "What wonderful news do you have for me this morning?"

"Good morning, Sweetheart! So I hope your feeling better this today and I just called to let you know that Phoenix has also signed the contract, so you'll have to go see him later today to see what you have to do in order to pull this marriage off." That was all the information I received before my mother hung up and left me gaping on the other end of the line.

                                                                                               ...

No matter how many times people tell me I have a well behaved toddler, if they had seen her after she was abruptly woken up from her nap, they'd instantly want to take their kind words back and shove them down their throat. Sianna has never been a morning person, which I'm thankful for in a way because it means I can sleep in if I ever have a day off (which isn't too often) but when it comes to circumstances like this where I need her awake for the day and ready to go, she becomes a real pain in the ass because of that quality.

Since I started the long process of getting ready to pay dear Phoenix a visit at 9AM and it's currently 11AM I want to physically slap myself because my goal was to be here by around 9:30 and out by 9:45ish by the latest, so I could finish the more important jobs on my list like getting boxes from the local hardware store so I can start the moving process or to see my bar manager to tell him I'm resigning as I've 'found' a better job.

I look into the dodgy pram I picked up from the second hand store only to find Sianna fast asleep once again, probably exhausted from her screaming session earlier. Sucking in a deep breath, I squared my shoulders and willed my legs to lead me into the King's gigantic office building.

I hadn't even properly entered the building before I was bombarded with questions from the young, overly talkative receptionist who somehow already knew who I was.

"So you must be Talla Knight also known as the future Mrs King! Wow you're so pretty and your niece is gorgeous! Anyway Mr King is expecting you, he's on floor 23. I'll just buzz through a message letting him know you're coming right on up."

With the the receptionist shoved me through the elevator, pressed my floor's destination and left me and the peacefully sleeping Sianna to face my new 'fiancee' all alone for the first time.
