Once upon a time, there was a timid witch living alone in the forest. She spent her nights perfecting spells, working hard to become the most powerful witch she could.
Every morning, she would walk out of the forest and head into one of the many towns nearby. She would ask people,
"Is there anything you need help with? I am a witch and could cast a spell for you."
Of course, once they had heard of what she was, they simply yelled at her,
"Go away! We don't want people like you here!"
Despite their reactions, the witch would still go out and look for someone. Wouldn't it be wonderful to help someone? she thought. And so she would always keep trekking to the towns to ask people if they needed anything.
Over time, the witch started to worry.
"I am a witch. Should I not be burned for this? Surely others think so. If that's the case, I should resign myself to that when it comes. Witchcraft could never be a good thing."
She continued to go to the villages every day.
As she was heading back home one day, a man came up to her.
"If you want people to talk to you, you should stop being a witch. It's unsightly; no one would want to be seen with someone like that. You should change your ways and find a job in town with everyone else."
The witch replied,
"You are probably right. No one enjoys the company of a witch. But it's alright if no one will speak to me. I must keep working hard with it, though. It's all I can do; all my life, it's the only thing I've been able to work on. At this point, there is no way I could work myself. Spells are all I know."
And so she returned home. She continued to work on her spells, and she continued to stay away from those outside of the forest each night.
Perhaps one day someone might visit her; if they needed her help, of course.
