Noboru dove down after her in the spur of the moment, not thinking carefully about using his quirk. How could he in such an abrupt and shocking situation that he still couldn't believe? Grasping her from the waist first and tucking Kumori in close, he jerked his body so that he would be the first to hit the ground.
Her expression of confusion had a spark of worry, concern, and sorrow as he glanced at the girl. Closing his eyes briefly, he grinned, tears flowing freely.
"Nobu, why is the kitty not moving?" she asked curiously, poking at the cat with a stick.
It was barely moving, with its warm breath the only way to tell it was still alive. Its eyes were already closed, as if it had already given up on life. The fur which seemed to have been white was matted with dirt and random leaves.
"The kitty is resting, " he breathed out, trying not to look so downcasted when he said it.
"Can we come back when its awake?"
Noboru had gritted his teeth at her naïve and hopeful silver eyes that would always steer him in odd ways, no, in the way she wanted it to be. "The kitty... Isn't going to wake up anytime soon."
"Then we can wait!" she exclaimed, sitting down next to it.
"Let's go home and we can come back tomorrow."
Pouting, she agreed and nodded, standing back up and waving to the cat sadly. "Bye-bye, kitty."
The red haired male held her tightly by the shoulders and light pulled her away. She had greeted them the same as usual when they came back. Her lime green hair had been pulled back into a ponytail and she wore the same tired, neutral expression on her face. More than likely it was the effect of the stress of living in the slums.
She strained a smile onto her face and procured some stale biscuits. "I managed to get a few before they were thrown away..."
"Okay, thanks, " he replied and turned to Taejin, "Take a biscuit."
Her small hand grabbed it and she took a bite of it, making sure that no one was looking to slip the other half into her pocket.
Night had came and a clap of thunder had followed with it. The rain pelted at their shelter, a few drops making it in, but it wasn't enough to awaken anyone for Taejin already was.
Snatching up a small piece of cardboard, she had made way to where she had found the cat. It was still there and was becoming soaking wet from the rain. She held the board over it and placed the biscuit piece which was already crumbling next to the stray. No movement occurred at all. "Why aren't you eating? You'll give up a life if you continue like this!"
There was still nothing and that was when it had dawned upon her. Tears streamed down her face and she fell to the ground. "... Don't give up, kitty."
Carefully, she lifted it up and placed it on the driest side of the cardboard. Taejin walked steadily, making no sudden movements as she went back to her home. She had even used her only other pair of clothes to absorb some of the water from the cat's fur.
No one had expected the cat to survive, but it did, whether it was for Taejin's kindness or for itself, it fought through and became a healthy cat once more.
"Sanosuke!" she proclaimed, "Cause he's a fighter, just like me!"
How the littlest things are underappreciated.
