memory.1 [8:30 a.m]
The smell of backed cookies was filling the small dormitory. As I rolled over the bed, I slowly closed my eyes, inhaling the beautiful scent.
"My mum must really like you. She never baked cookies before."
I opened my eyes to see my lover standing in the doorway, wearing that blue suit he hated so much, with his brown hair, like melted chocolate, covering his eyes. He gave me a sweet smile, the one I loved so much, and approached me. I welcomed him with a warm hug.
"Good morning, Seidou! Ready for work?" I said with a hint of amusement in my voice. I knew goddamn well how much he despised that place.
"Not really. When am I ever ready for anything"
I caressed his hair and as always, he pouted
"When are you going to stop treating me like a child, huh?". He then leaned in and placed a kiss on my forehead. "See you tonight. I gotta go now. Have a wonderful day!".
Still sleepy, I waved at him and watched the man I loved most leaving our bedroom. God only knew that was the last time I was ever gonna see this view...
After a few more moments of silence, I heard the sound of the oven. The cookies, my breakfast, were ready. I quickly climbed out of bed, put on my normal clothes and went downstairs.
In the kitchen, Seidou's mum, Michie was holding the tray in her gloved hands. As soon as she noticed me, she gave me that mother-like smile that melts your heart. The skin around her eyes and mouth crumpled like paper:
"Have a nice morning, Mary! I baked you some cookies. Seidou said these were your favourite. I truly hope you enjoy them"
"Thank you, Mrs. Takizawa. I am sure they are delicious" I replied, smiling back at the lovely woman.
She excused herself, claiming she needed to go to the grocery store, and left the kitchen. As I stood at the wooden table, munching the cookies, I realised two things. The first one: Seidou looked very much like his mum. The second one: I loved that man from the bottom of my heart. I wanted to actually do something for him, not just help around the house. We were both 20 but he was working for the CCG and I was very much unemployed. He deserved better, so I was going to be better for him.
I finished my cookie and stood up, clapping my hands as an encouragement. I was truly going to apply for a job as a nurse that day...
[10:20 p.m]
In the afternoon I left the hospital. After a hard day, I was finally accepted and was going to start working there the next week. I was so excited, thrilled actually and couldn't wait to get home and tell Seidou and his mum the good news. I walked down the street in a bouncy manner, wanting everyone to know how happy and proud I was. However, as soon as I got to the house and saw Michie crying in the living room, holding a paper in her white, shaky hands, my heart dropped. I threw my backpack on the ground and ran to hug her. I didn't even have to look at the dammed document, signed by the CCG manager to know what happened.
Seidou was dead.

memory.2 [4.57 a.m]
Two weeks have passed since Seidou's death. Or disappearance. The first thing I did was to go straight to the CCG headquarters, demanding for answers. It was too sudden. There was no way Seidou could've died on the battlefield. Both me and Michie needed to know what truly happened.
As expected, answers never came. So I laid in bed for the next week, didn't even go to my new job. The rare hours of sleep I got were more of a curse than a blessing. Every time I closed my burning eyes, memories of my lover were rushing through my mind, more tears were falling down my cheeks and more questions remained unanswered.
One night I remembered the promise I made to him: to be a better person. So I thought of going to the CCG Academy, enrolling in the 20th ward to actually make a change. To prevent those wasteful, unnecessary deaths and maybe even find out what happened to Seidou...

[present]
Just a 4 a.m thought, however, here I am now, five years later, rushing down the dark tunnel, with my team by my side, leading them towards the abandoned building, probably filled with ghouls ready to devour them.
Only to get the answers I needed, to find my love...
