PROLOGUE

RENJUN
"Tell me it isn't true!" the brunet yelled at the top of his lungs, tears stinging his eyes.
"Jun, please calm downㅡ" the woman reached out to her son, but he backed away.
"I'm begging you! Tell me it isn't true!" he screamed, voice cracking as a son escaped his lips. He watched as his mother pursed her lips, hanging her head. That gave Renjun his answer before she confirmed it.
The brunet shook his head slowly, "Not Xuxi-ge. You're lying, right? Right?" He raised his voice as he spoke, but his mother remained silent. "First Sicheng-ge and now Xuxi? This isn't fair!"
"Honey, I'm sorry. Butㅡ"
"Sorry for what? You let him go there! You let him die! The only brother I had left is dead! Why did you let him go?" He was too angry to think about the harsh words tumbling out of his mouth.
"Renjun, he wanted to go. And you know you have to go too. Where he was has nothing to do with his death, Jun," his mother reasoned.
The boy let out a shaky breath. "You expect me to go there? After that place claimed the life of both the brothers I never had?"
"Honey, you'll have a better future thereㅡ"
"Do you even love me?" he cut his mother off, glaring at the woman.
She looked at him with wide eyes, "Of course I do!"
"Then why are you so desperate to get rid of me?" he cried.
"That's not what this is about! Renjun, I want what's best for you!" his mother argued.
"Fine," he gritted his teeth. "I'll go since you want me to so badly. You love me? Lies. Love is one big lie."
"I do love you, Huang Renjun!" Now his mother had tears in her eyes. This isn't how she imagined the conversation would go. Renjun had taken the news far worse than she had expected.
The brunet scoffed, heart aching with painful memories of his brothers. His love had only ever hurt him. "Love means nothing to me anymore."
