Selene thought that she couldn't be surprised by anything her mother tells her now. She had seen it all. It's either "I'm getting married to the Emperor" or "guess who just bought a polar bear". Occasionally is was about fancy dresses that cost 1000 each.
So when her mother told her that she was going to get married to her stepbrother, Selene shrugged it off. It wasn't that she wasn't shocked by this news. It was something, but it was just the kind of thing Channary Blackburn did. "Oh I'm gonna marry this guy and when you're old enough you're gonna marry his son! Doesn't that sound exciting?"
Selene sighed in front of the mirror one of the only ones in the castle, since her aunt Levana has tried to banish them. She hated mirrors since you looked like yourself in front of them. Selene has seen Levana's true looks, they weren't pretty. So she could understand why she always wore the gift, but Selene didn't understand why she so badly wanted to be beautiful.
Besides the weird mirror thing, her aunt was pretty nice. She wasn't that fun, kind of distant, but nicer than her sister. Ever since her husband died she's been that way. Everett had seemed to be the sole thing that Levana cared about.
Everyone said she was devastated when Everett died.
His daughter, Winter, was still thriving in the castle. She and Selene weren't really friends, it's not like Selene's mother let her hang out with just anyone.
Still in front of the mirror, Selene turned and flopped on the bed in her gown that was a foot longer then she was. She kicked off the 5 inch heels and stared at the ceiling. The pink flowers printed on the walls swirled Selene's thoughts around like fudge. The voices of her mother, her aunt, her stepdad, and her soon to be husband, rose up fighting for dominance. Selene banged her head back against the clean covers to shut the voices out.
Of course this was her life. Of course the universe would find a way to punish Selene for her mothers mistakes.
What did I ever do to you? She asked to an unnamed god. The fact that she was going to marry someone. When she was a teenager. To someone who she has known since she was born. It hit her with full force in that second, and tears started to track lines down her carefully manicured face.
A loud knock at the door led Selene into a quick state of panic. She rubbed ferociously at her eyes and tripped her way over to the mirror again.
Shit, Selene thought staring at her reflection. Smudges of mascara and eyeliner dotted her face.
"Selene?" Levana asked, slightly irritated now, "Can I come in? I want to talk to you about your mother."
She knows.
Selene flipped over the mirror and strutted over to the door, hoping she didn't look to much of a mess. She opened it and came face-to-face with her aunt.
Levana was wearing a veil thrown back, so she must have just come from entertaining the public. Her lips were a soft red, and eyes decorated with purple and blue. The mascara was a dark brown, highlighting Levana's rich chocolate eyes.
It scared Selene sometimes how much she knew about makeup.
Levana burst right in as soon as she knew the door was open. She paced the carpet, standing tall as her heels sank into the soft ground. After a while, she noticed Selene watching and Levana glared at her.
"Shut the door, please," she said and Selene complied.
"Good," Levana stated, " Now, let's talk about the ridiculous things your mother expects from you. And me," she added at the end.
Selene allowed herself a smile. This was the one thing that she and her aunt agreed on. It's not she didn't love her mother. She was just, a little much sometimes.
"First, she wants you to give a speech declaring your true love for the prince," Levana declared, her finger in the air as she recited off facts. Any professor would be proud, "Second, she wants you and me to be the sole organizers for the royal wedding, which do have strict requirements by the way."
Selene sighed. Yay.
"Third, she wants you to suddenly be an amazing actress—"
"Hey!"
"Don't give me that, who do you think was forced to watch your toddler plays?"
Levana took a deep breath before continuing, "She wants you to convince everyone that you are in love with the guy, whose name I don't even know..."
"Kaito" Selene interrupted, and Levana gave her a look.
"Fine. You have to be in love with Kaito. And finally, you have to have at least 1 child with him, fully binding the country and planet." Levana finished, slouching down on an armchair with a thump. It amazed Selene how Levana could still be so much like a teenager, even well into her twenties. A question popped up in Selene's mind.
"Does the emperor have a say in this? I mean, does he approve?"
Levana gave her a wry look, "I'm sure Channary has her ways of convincing him." Selene automatically knew what that meant. Her mother was controlling her husband into getting what she wanted. Her disgust with the whole situation tripled. She'd have to deal with this the rest of her life. And her kid would too, as long as her mother was still alive.
Unless...
Selene shoved that thought away. She couldn't kill her own mother. She loved her mother. Would do anything for her.
And yet...
Levana snorted, startling Selene.
"Well at least I know I'm not the only one who is disturbed by this, all the other artimisians are wrapped around her finger. Men and women." Levana shook her head and pulled herself from the chair. She passed by Selene, hesitating before the door.
"If you need to, like, talk or something...I guess some other kids could help. Like Winter, or your other friends."
The door slammed shut before Selene could explain that she didn't have any.
