The cold metal of the gun was pressed so hard against my head, I began to feel lightheaded.

Teresa had fainted from shock and I was debating what to do mentally.

Please, Teresa, please, I begged. Wake up!

Finally, I set my emotions aside and pushed Owen down, rage buzzing, angry at myself for ever trusting him.

He was probably a part of some stupid Variable anyway.

I continued hitting him, over and over again, wanting to end his life like he almost had ended ours.

A feeble "No..I was never going to....you don't under-"

And then, all at once he was gone. I picked up the gun he had almost shot me with.

I pulled the trigger, but nothing happened. Confused, I noticed the gun was permanently set to safety. The other pistol in his belt was the same.

He had never intended to actually shoot us. And why were the WICKED scientists applauding?

"You did well, Thomas. That was an evil man trying to, erm, kidnap you," a rodent-like man chided. "You just barely escaped with your life!"

A horrible thought dawned on me. No. No, no, no.

Teresa stood, groggily rubbing her eyes. "Wha-what happened? Thomas? Why is Owen-"

A wave of nausea washed over me. This man was dead.

Our last shot of escaping, gone. Gone from false anger, worse, my false anger. I am responsible for the cold, unmoving body on the ground.

Now WICKED knows of our plans. Months of planning, wasted in minutes.

Tomorrow? It's our last chance.

After that, our lives will be exactly like the things we witness on the screens each and every day. Horrific beasts, destroyed lives, no recollection of my past life. All I will have is my name.

My eyes harden as the scientists drag me into the laboratory for another checkup.

I fantasize how to get out of here as fast as possible, but Teresa's pleading glance stops me.

We can escape, and we most definitely will.

But that's something that can only be done in due time. Proper planning is crucial, the escape has to come down to a perfect science.

No more failed attempts.

Our actions tomorrow will be responsible for the rest of our short lives.
