He traced his hand on the wall as he remembered all the times he had fallen short of a good boyfriend.
He made her wait in the rain for 35 minutes because his phone died
He spoils the ends of movies frequently
He didn't call her on Valentines day
He told her he'd quit smoking, but he lied
He rarely gave her enough of his time
Why did she love him? He wondered. Aside from a mediocre musical talent, he felt like the most boring man in the world. She could have anyone she wanted, and she chose to be with him. She could be the queen of the world. He felt selfish and dizzy. Those glasses of champagne on the flight were beginning to kick in.
There was one incident that always burned in his mind when he thought about if he could change one thing in his past. It was her birthday, not an important one, but she took birthdays seriously. He went the extra mile that year. He got balloons, he bought a chocolate cake, a sweet card, and a necklace with her favorite gem.
When she got home, he put his hands over his eyes and led her into the kitchen where all her gifts were. But, his hands slipped away and she saw the surprise too soon. She played it off as if she was not bothered by it, but he kicked himself for it because the disappointed look on her face shattered his world. All he wanted was to make her smile.
Another time, one he didn't regret as much, was when they got in yet another heated argument.
"You never listen to me!" Alex said loudly. He followed his girlfriend into the bedroom.
"I was listening! And you didn't answer me! Who was the woman you were texting!" She said, louder, pacing the floor.
"She was nobody important!" He said as he threw his hands in the air angrily.
"THAT'S NOT AN ANSWER!" She screamed and before she knew it her hands were around his neck. Fortunately, not very tight.
The two of them were breathing heavily. Their faces were inches apart. His hair was falling in front of his eyes and her lips were parted slightly. Suddenly they smashed their lips together as if their fight continued with their mouths. When she looked like that, what else did she expect?
He missed doing that. He could always still adore her with her hands around his neck. At least he did then.
