"Dee, is that you?" I heard my mom call from the kitchen

"Dee, is that you?" I heard my mom call from the kitchen.

"Yea, it's me," I said as I closed the door behind me after entering the house.

"I told you to call me when you got out so I could come pick you up."

"It's fine. I just took an uber."

"How was your first day?" my mom asked.

"The same as any other first day," I said going over to the kitchen island where she stood.

I didn't feel like explaining how I had to look for my classes and go through half of the day alone because I didn't know anyone. It was nothing new.

"Did you make some friends?"

"Ma, I'm a senior in high school. The last thing on my mind is making friends. Besides, it won't matter if we have to leave and I have to change schools for the millionth time."

My family had been moving around for years trying to find better opportunities for us. My dad finally got a good opportunity for a promotion at his job, but the catch was moving here to Atlanta.

"I think this may be the last time we'll have to move, Dee."

"You said that the last time," I said propping my elbow up on the island and resting my head in the palm of my hand.

"Like I said before, Diamanté, I hate this as much as you do, but it had to be done."

"So you wanted to keep giving up your job as a nurse just for dad?" I asked.

"To say I didn't get attached to where I worked would be a lie, but the truth is, nurses are always needed somewhere," she said as she started getting things out of the fridge to make dinner.

"You know how your dad is. He was raised traditionally. He's the man and supposedly the head of the family, so in his eyes, he's supposed to be the breadwinner."

I'd heard this speech many times before, and I wasn't particularly in the mood for a repeat.

"I'm gonna go start on my homework," I told my mom before going up the stairs.

"I'll call you down when dinner is ready," my mom said.

I opened the door to my basically empty room, which only consisted of my bed, a dresser, my tv, and a desk so far. Since we moved around a lot, I started keeping my rooms light to decrease the amount of stuff that would have to be moved. It would be nice to be able to fully decorate my room for once.
