Peter started to cry,"When will I ever see you again, Tink?" Tinkerbell smiled sweetly and replied in her bell-like voice,"You know that place between sleep and awake, the place where you can still remember dreaming? That's where I'll always love you, Peter Pan. That's where I'll be waiting.."***
6 years later
***Wendy sat at her dressing table staring at her reflection. She had been dreading this night for weeks and no matter how hard she wished it would be cancelled it had arrived. Her 18th birthday party. Mother had organised it. Father had insisted upon it. He said it would,"introduce her into London society." So, naturally, Mr Darling had invited all of his colleagues and their families from the bank and Mrs Darling- her friends and their families from book club and sewing circle. Wendy knew none of these people and, oh, how she hated meeting new people. Too many names to remember.
Wendy had her golden gown on which had been made by the best dress maker in London. It tightened in all the right places and showed off just the right amount of cleavage. Her chocolate curls had been pinned up stylishly. Her hair had grown darker over the years due to lack of sunshine. She was securing her hair with a few more pins when a knock sounded at her door.
"Who is it?"
"It's me, Wendy!"
She recognised his voice immediately,"Come in, Peter."
It was hard to believe that just 6 years ago Peter and the six lost boys had become her brothers.
Peter, John, Curly and Slightly had moved out of the house a year earlier and had their own apartments in London and each had their own jobs. John had started at the bank, Curly and Slightly had found jobs doing books for various stores in London and Peter had begun working at a new store, which was becoming very popular among the rich and famous, Selfridges.
After the children returned from Neverland, Wendy and Peter had not become the sweethearts John and Michael thought they would. Other than the kiss they shared on the Jolly Rodger the two loved each other simply as brother and sister. They were the best of friends and would tell each other everything and, ever since their kiss, Peter had become quite fond of relaying his feelings to Wendy, especially regarding a certain Gina Brown whom he had met on his first day with the Darling family.
Gina was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Brown who were the very close neighbours of the Darlings. Gina and Peter became very fond of each other and would chat to each other through the fence whenever they got the chance. As the years went by they both developed feelings for each other and when Peter turned 16 he finally plucked up the courage to ask Gina to accompany him to a party They had been courting ever since.
"Oh, Wendy, you look spectacular!" Peter said as he entered her room.
Wendy turned in her seat to face him,"And don't you look handsome!"
Peter knelt down next to Wendy's seat at the dresser and she said,"It's funny, isn't it? The thing we dreaded most has finally come true."
Peter's face was puzzled,"What's that?"
"Growing up."
Both of then glanced in the mirror. Yes, it was true, they had grown up and their childhood was over.
"It was inevitable. All children have to grow up," Peter said. Wendy dropped her head sadly. "Come now," Peter said lifting Wendy's chin with his finger,"We can't be upset on a night like this," he smiled, "especially with you all gorgeously dressed up like this!"
Wendy stood up from her chair and spun around for Peter. "You really think I look gorgeous?" she asked, a blush creeping up her cheeks.
"Absolutely!" he smiled.
"Peter, I miss you. The house is dreadfully quiet now that you're gone."
"I know. But I promise to visit you more often. We can go to the park, take walks to the café like we used to."
"That's all very well but it's not the same."
Peter placed his hands on Wendy's shoulders,"No matter where we are, no matter how old we get I will always love you, Wendy."
"I love you, too, Peter."
Peter put his arms around Wendy and pulled her into a hug. They were best friends and nothing would ever come between them. They stood like this for a few moments and a tear slid down Wendy's cheekbone. Peter pulled away,"No. No tears. We don't want you getting all splotchy. Come on, the guests have arrived." He began pulling her towards the door.
"I still have a few things to do. Tell mother and father I'll be down in a minute."
"Alright," he replied. He smiled and left the room.
As soon as his footsteps had faded away Wendy quickly rushed to her drawers and hauled out the pile of books covering her most cherished possession: a pirates medalion. But this medalion didn't belong to just any pirate. It belonged to the most feared pirate captain to ever sail the Neverland seas: Captain James Hook.
Wendy had stolen it from Hook's cabin the night he kidnapped her in her "house" the lost boys had built her. The "kiss" Peter had given her, on the other hand, she had given back to Peter when he left the house so he would remember her. The only connection she had to Neverland was, now, this medalion. The golden medalion hung on a long gold chain. The mealion was solid gold and round and in the centre sat a skull which she now traced with her thumb.
After she returned from Neverland she no longer fell asleep to the songs for mermaids in her head nor did she dream of dancing in the fairy glens surrounded by pixie dust. As soon as she closed her eyes each night his voice was all she could hear and his piercing blue eyes and silver hook were all that she could see. When she turned 16 the dreams intensified. In her dreams she could feel his breath on her neck and his hand raking over her body. She would wake up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat and her body filled with an unquenchable heat. And as the months passed it got worse and worse. Wendy fought with herself over why exactly she was having these feelings for a man she hadn't seen in years and was likely never to see again.
Wendy decided to wear the medalion. It would give her the confidence to face everyone. Thank goodness the chain was long enough to hide the skull from sight. Her Aunt Millicent had once found Wendy admiring it and nearly flushed it down the toilet saying it was,"the most ghastly thing," she had ever seen but luckily Wendy had convinced her Aunt to let her keep it.
"WENDY! Get down here! Everyone is waiting!" Speak of the devil.
"Oh well," Wendy thought,"time to grow up."
