song of the chapter-
girls- the 1975

~emma~

after school ended, gray and i decided to go to our local cafe to get some snacks and coffee. we always came here after school to catch up and talk about our day.

i've been on my phone this whole time. i should feel bad but grayson hasn't even been trying to find fundraiser ideas this whole summer. i've been doing all the work. it's okay though, i honestly don't mind.

"em? EMMA!" he says pulling my attention away from my phone.

"huh what sorry?" i say.

"what are you even doing?" he asks taking a sip of his coffee.

"i'm trying to find a good idea for the carnival fundraiser. somebody has to." i say making the i'm trying stick out trying to hint him at the fact that he's done nothing.

"hey look em, i'm sorry okay? i know i've been a bad best friend lately but you know i just got through that break up with alice. it's just been hard." he says.

him and alice were perfect together. they dated for all of high school until just before summer break. she left with no reason. she didn't tell gray why or even leave a clue to why. it was just so weird. yes i felt bad for him, but we have got to find an idea before friday.

"and i get that gray, i'll be here for you for as long as you need." i say, putting my phone down and reaching for his hand. we stay like this for a while.

"okay!" he says suddenly. retracting his hand from mine. "well what about that strength game? everyone love that thing! you know, the game with the sledge hammer and the bell?"

"yeah... chess team picked that one." i say.

he gives me that 'seriously..?' face. "i know." i respond.

"what abouuuttt..." he says thinking, "oh! what about a dunking booth?"

"swim team picked it."

"UGH!!"

"i know dude who saw that one comin?" i laugh.

"are you coming to the party on friday?" he asks changing the subject.

"i don't know, probably. why?"

"i think i'm gonna try and kiss caroline. i think it would be good to get my mind off of alice." he says.

"dude are you sure? like we said before, you and alice just broke up at the beginning of summer and you're obviously still hurt by it... don't make any stupid moves, okay?" i don't want him to get hurt again. not that i don't think that he's good enough for caroline, it's just i don't think she likes him that way.

"yeah.." he says frowning, "yeah you're right sorry i was being stupid." he says with a fake laugh.

"besides, she's a varsity cheerleader." i say.

"what?! so are you!"

"what's that supposed to mean?" i say highly confused.

"no no i didn't mean it like that!" he says, noticing he hurt me.

"be careful gray.." i take a nice long sipe of my latte.

"sorry.."

"it's fine."

"no it's not! i just completely compared you to caroline, that's totally not fair to you! gosh i'm such an asshole." he says putting his hands over his eyes.

"no gray, really it's okay!" what he said was right but i didn't want my best friend feeling like this. it's not right.

"really? good!" he says.
