Charlie’s P.O.V.

Walking in the cool morning air felt nice against my painfully red skin, even if it was all covered up. I left the house before Father woke up, Mother had woken me up to make sure I was out of the house before he could do anything worse to me.

When I made it near the school, I looked over what I was wearing to check that all my injuries were covered up. Sighing I walked to the building with eyes following me. Why aren’t they doing anything? I thought to myself before I remembered what happened to the other guys that messed with me yesterday. Luther and Zack. I felt bad for the two boys despite what they did.

“Wee!” I heard Zylerie’s voice as she jumped onto my back. I held back a hiss of pain and looked at an overly happy Zylerie. “Hey Charlie!”

“H-hey Zylerie.” I smiled glad I wasn’t on her bad side. But I wondered how I even got on her good side.

“There’s someone I want you to meet today!” Zylerie practically sang as she jumped off my back and linked her fingers with mine.

“Uh...okay, w-who is it?”

“Max, he’s really cool. You’ll like him. He’s more like Tobias, kind of. And everyone likes Tobias’ vibe, even if they don’t like him.” Zylerie ranted.

“W-where is Tobias?”

“He’s with Lukas and Max.” I nodded in understanding as we approached a table that had Tobias’ dirty blonde hair, Lukas’ brown, and a blue-haired boy. We sat down at the two seats that were saved for us.

“Hey Charlie.” Lukas and Tobias smiled my way. I smiled back at them.

“Maxie,” Zylerie grabbed his hand, “this is Charlie. He’s our new friend.” The blue-haired boy looked up from his lap at Zylerie.

“He’s small.” The boy’s light voice came out when he looked at me.

“You’re smaller.” Tobias smiled nudging him. The boy’s cheeks turned red.

“Shut up.” The boy mumbled. “I’m Max, and you must be the famous Charlie.” Max smiled.

“F-famous...?” I questioned looking over at Zylerie and Tobias who were sitting at the edge of the table.

“Yup, I already met the famous Lukas.” Max giggled. He brushed his sky-blue hair from his face and looked over to Lukas who sat to my left.

“Apparently Zylerie and Tobias told him about us.” Lukas said and sent a playful glare at Zylerie. Max began laughing, a cute little laugh.

“It’s also all over the internet.” Max laughed pulling out his phone. After typing something on it he placed it in front of us. “Watch both videos, the second is my favorite.” We nodded and kept our eyes on the phone. It was a video of Lukas snapping at some guy.

“Oh, please Fairy, you don’t wanna break a nail now.” The guy barked. In the video Lukas looked like he was about to punch the guy but a small hand was seen tapping his shoulder.

“Even if he doesn’t mind,” I heard Zylerie’s voice in the video, “you still have to deal with me.” The guy let out a throaty laugh.

“You’re tiny, and a girl on top of that.” He bellowed.

“James I would-” A voice called out, probably someone in the crowd, before Zylerie punched him square in the face.

“You little b!tch!” The guy yelled and Zylerie shrugged.

“I’m not a dog.” She said plainly then an administrator was seen walking in and the video was cut off.

“-SEATS NOW!” Logan’s angry voice came from the phone when the second video started. I was seen holding my nose and blood seeping through my fingers. He pointed to Zack, “You.”

“Y-yes?” Zack jumped in his seat and Lukas laughed.

“That teacher is cool.” Lukas laughed as Logan told Zack to get the paper towels and Zack came back into the room and gave Logan the paper towels, it was obvious the video was cut to be shortened. Logan was seen cleaning my nose as Zylerie slammed the door open causing the whole class to jump. Her eyes were dark, deathly dark.

“Who. Did. That.” Zylerie seethed. Now looking at her correctly I could see why people were scared and haven’t messed with me since. She was scary when she was mad. After Luther let go of the information that Zylerie wanted to hear, Zylerie went to tell me ‘bye’ and gave the class her threat, and it was then I realized she knew she was being recorded because she looked right the camera. Then at Luther and Zack.

“Well, that was something.” Logan chuckled and the video was cut to Luther and Zack Showing their wet jeans so they could go to the nurse.

“You made them piss their pants!” Lukas laughed.

“Oh, it was nothing.” Zylerie shrugged smiling at Max. Max blushed and looked away.

“She wasn’t always like that.” Tobias said looking at his sister.

“Time to head to class!” Zylerie popped up and grabbed a bag.

“You actually brought school supplies today?” Max asked, astonishment in his voice.

“It’s food.” Zylerie laughed and grabbed mine and Lukas’ hand. Tobias slipped his hand into Max’s as we walked down the hall. The crowd of students parted ways for us to pass as usual. In our first class Zylerie just talked to me about random nonsense (it was how she believed people in the class were stupid retards and such) and we ate the food in her bag. She placed the food on my desk and said, very sternly I might add, ‘eat’.

“Zombie!” Max called out at the end of class when he found us.

“Hey Maxie.” Zylerie smiled.

“Hey Charlie.” Max smiled at me and blushed a little. “Where are the other two?”

“Their classes are on the other side of school.” Zylerie shrugged and Max pouted.

“Darn.” Max mumbled.

“What do you have right now?” Zylerie asked letting go of my hand to fix her hair into a ponytail.

“Uh,” Max pulled out his schedule and glanced over it, “a teacher named Venos, its Literature.”

“AP?” I asked.

“Yea, how’d you know? This is your first year here.” Max smiled.

“I h-have h-him.” I stuttered out looking at the floor.

“Oh, cool,” Zylerie pipped in, “you two have the same class.”

“Sweet.” Max smirked. Zylerie then walked us to Logan’s class and then left to Mr. Summers’ room.

“Hey Charlie.” Logan greeted when we walked in. “You must be Maximus.”

“Hey! You were my sisters’ teacher two years ago!” Max said suddenly.

“Was I? What was her name?” Logan asked and I placed my bag by his desk before slipping back with them.

“Samantha Baker.”

“Ah, she took the class twice, right?”

“Yup! So where do I sit teach?”

“Go ahead and sit there.” Logan said pointing to my old seat. Luther and Zack were already in their seats.

“Can I sit next to Charlie?” Max asked, hope filling his eyes. He glanced and winked at me. I blushed and turned around. I walked to Logan’s desk as Max asked where I was going. I plopped into the chair that was supposed to be for teachers only. Logan laughed as Max looked at me dumbfounded.

“Hey Faggot!” Luther called. The class went quiet and Max tensed. “That’s the teachers’ chair.”

“Luther.” Logan growled. “Quit it or I'll send you to the office.”

“Oh, I'm so scared.” Luther taunted. “Just because I'm messing with your favorite student. That’s bullsh!t. Charlie is a fag.”

“So what?” Logan turned to me and I suddenly realized that the words left my mouth.

“You should die! That’s what.” Luther snarled.

“Just because I'm gay?” I asked smiling and spinning in Logan’s chair, I had an idea that would make him look idiotic.

“That's disgusting. It's not right so yea, you should be ashamed of yourself.”

“So, I can’t be gay?” I asked again, this time being completely serious, I even stopped spinning.

“Being gay is against the Bible! It’s against God!” A girl yelled. That’s what I wanted to hear.

“You wouldn’t know that though, you’re the son of Satan.” Luther smiled viciously.

“I may be,” I shrugged, “but I still don’t understand why I cannot be gay.” I said making my face look questioning. Logan sat on his desk and Max stayed standing, possibly too afraid to go near Luther.

“It’s against the Bible!” A boy screamed.

“It is?” I asked sounding dumbfounded and holding my tongue from saying that it wasn’t.

“Yes!” A girl exclaimed.

“So,” I said thoughtfully and walked to the desks the students were at. Standing in front of Luther. He won’t hurt me, Zylerie would hear about it then he would be... I don’t know. What would she do? I looked him in the eyes and saw the angry fire in them, “it’s against the Bible to be happy?” I asked smiling. “That’s a terrible thing to live by.” I sighed sorrowfully. Logan laughed and turned back to Max.

“So, where were you yesterday? I don’t recall seeing you in class.”

“No, I couldn’t make it yesterday.” Max smiled.

“Ah, so how do you know Charlie?” Logan asked protectively.

“H-he’s f-friends with Zylerie.” I stuttered out, losing my ability to speak again. Logan nodded and Max went to sit. I avoided making eye contact with Max while Logan explained the assignment for the day. Around the middle of class I realized Luther and Zack were not in class.

“So why you sitting over here?” Max asked when he turned in his work. I stopped spinning and looked at him.

“Logan said my seat is here.” I looked down and saw Logan look up at us from the corner of my eye. Max nodded and pulled up a seat after asking Logan if it was okay. He talked to me about how he met Zylerie and Tobias, which was pretty similar to how Lukas and I had. When the class let out Max said he’d walk me to Mr. Summers’ class since he had him too.

“Good morning Charlie.” Mr. Summers greeted when I walked in. I waved bye to Zylerie and smiled at the teacher.

“M-morning.”

“Hey Mr. Summers.” Max said when he walked in behind me.

“Hello Kyle.” I stopped and turned to make sure Max was still behind me and he was. “Looks like you have me again this year.”

“Seems so.” Max smiled.

“You’re partnered with Charlie, so you can just sit by him.” Mr. Summers informed Max.

“Cool.” Max smiled and walked over to where I was already sitting. He smiled at my confused look. “It’s my middle name.”  Max refused to explain why they called him that and I decided to not push it and we worked on the project.

~~~~Later that week~~~~
Friday. The students most favorite day of the week. I sighed when Mother came to wake me up as she had been doing that whole week when she found out about Father. Mother always cared deeply about me, I was her ‘baby’, but Father was always beating her.
“Honey, wake up.” Mother whispered to me, kneeling by my bed. She had a black eye and a bruise forming on her chest and arm.
“Are you okay Mother?” I asked rubbing the sleep from my eyes.
“I’m fine, you should hurry before your father wakes up.” Mother smiled kindly and walked out of the attic. Climbing out of bed I got dressed and grabbed my bag from the floor. As I rushed to get out of the house, I heard Father’s voice call out to Mother. I froze and decided to listen instead of running out of the house to safety like my mind was yelling at me to do.
“Akita! Where is my breakfast!” Fathers’ voice boomed with anger.
“I’m just finishing up.” Mother said calmly.
“Where’s the faggot? I haven’t seen the bastard for a few days.”
“Why do you want to know?”
“WHY ELSE YOU STUPID B! TCH? THIS IS MY HOUSE!” I stepped closer to the entrance so I can get a better view and saw Father with his hand around Mother’s throat. I panicked, Father can be vicious.
“Father! You’ll hurt her!” I said as I stumbled into the kitchen.
“Well, well, look who finally showed up.” Father smiled viciously. ‘Crap,’ I thought to myself, ‘if I get bruises, I would have to explain to them since the five of us grew close in this week.’
“Father, please,” I begged hopelessly, “don’t hurt mother.” Father then let go of her with no emotion on his face.
“Okay,” Father said calmly, “I won’t hurt her.” There was something sinister about his voice. “Akita, go to the room.” Father growled, his eyes trained on me.
“But-” Mother began to plead.
“GO!” Father yelled and held a knife at her.
“I-I'll be fine Mother.” I attempted to reassure her and she nodded before walking out of the kitchen.
“You act just like your old self when you’re protecting Akita.” Father said with soft eyes.
“She’s my mother Father, obviously I'll protect her.” I stated watching the knife in his hand.
“You are just a Faggot.” Father growled and lifted the knife.
“You are my Father.” I said with the same tone as him. Father narrowed his eyes and pushed me into the wall. He glided the knife along my skin making slight cuts on my face, throat, and arms.
“You are no son of mine.” Father seethed. He pushed me to the floor, discarding the knife, and began punching me.
To him it didn’t matter where his fists were connecting while I attempted to block him from hitting my face. ‘I asked for it.’ I told myself with every hit that connected with my body. After it felt like my bones were bruised, and possibly broken, he stopped. Father stood up and I removed my arms from my face. In a flash a desk was broken against me too fast to fully re-block myself. I placed my hand on the tiled floor to lift myself up when I felt a weight begin to place pressure on it.
“How does that feel you fag?” Father growled as he continued to add his body weight on my hand and twist his foot. I screamed and Father laughed, Mother was knocked out on the floor where she attempted to stop Father from hurting me. Once Father heard a loud ‘crack’ come from my hand he walked away and left the house.
I laid there cradling my hand before finally getting up and seeing that I was late for school. Limping to the bathroom on the first floor of the house I saw my shirt was ripped and there was dirt and bruises coating my skin.
“I’ll pass.” I mumbled to myself deciding it would be best to stay home. I quickly went to the kitchen and formed a misshapen brace and grabbed some ice. Grabbing a water bottle, I went to where my Mother lay. She was already sitting up and looking around.
“Are you okay honey?” She asked although she was slightly bleeding from her head. I nodded and handed her the water. “Sweetie, your hand.” Mother gasped when she noticed my other hand bandaged up, the one Father stepped on.
“It’s fine.” I said calmly, attempting, again, to reassure her.
“What happened?” She asked her eyes turning dark as she stood looking for the man responsible.
“He left.” I stated. “And he just stepped on my hand is all.”
“Let me see.” Mother limped over and took off the things I put on my hand. She gasped at the purple-blue skin that spotted my hand and the weird way one of my fingers bent. “You need to get a cast sweetie.” Mother said sadly. We couldn’t go to the hospital, Father would be furious. So, Mother took it to call a family friend. After a half hour Kevin showed up.
“Hey you guys.” Kevin smiled as he entered the house. Kevin knew Mother since they were in high school, he also knew about our situation but stayed quite because Father had attacked him too when Kevin went to the police. Father was very lucky the day Kevin went to the police station because the officer Kevin talked to was good poker buddies with Father. So, instead of sending Father to jail, the officer, as well as a few others, covered it up. Mother and I were trapped.
“Hey Kevin.” I forced a smile back, the pain in my hand preventing me from giving him a genuine smile.
“I hope you didn’t have to go too far out of your way to do this.” Mother said giving him a hug.
“I’d cross burning lava for my two favorite people.” Kevin chuckled and gave Mother a kiss on the forehead. “Now,” Kevin focused on me, “let me see that hand.” After a while of Kevin working on my hand, he finally got a cast on and sighed.
“I’m sorry.” I mumbled.
“For what?” Kevin asked placing my hand gently on a pillow that was on my lap.
“For this.” I looked at the floor in front of me. “It’s all my fault.”
“None of this is your fault Charlie.” Kevin sighed. I opened my mouth to argue but Kevin continued. “It’s his fault for not being able to accept who you are.” I smiled at Kevin, he was nice to Mother and I.
“Would you like something to eat or drink? I made brownies.” Mother asked walking into the living room while cleaning her hands on a towel.
“I would love some.” Kevin smiled and helped me up. That weekend Kevin stayed with us and Father didn’t return home. When Monday rolled around Kevin was gone, since he left the night prior, and Father was home. I slipped out of the house and went to a nearby park. There was no way I was going to school, I was still covered in bruises. I could easily lie and say I fell down the stairs, but would they believe that?
“Are you going to ditch school again?” I heard someone ask beside me. Gripping the chain to the swing, I fought to regain my balance. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you Charlie.” I shrank into my hoodie, how did he know it was me? “I got worried when you didn’t show up to school Friday, your friends were worried too. I asked your Mom where I could find you since you weren’t home, I asked your Dad first but he was in a rush.” The person continued. “I also know how the other students have been treating you so I wanted to make sure that something didn’t happen to you. Charlie,” he sighed, “look at me and tell me you’re alright, that’s all I ask.”
“I can’t.” I breathed out. I saw the person kneel in front of me but I didn’t push him away.
“Why is that?” He asked lifting my face to look at him. Logan stared at me and pushed my hood down. I then realized he could see my skin perfectly so I finally pushed him back making myself fall off the swing. “Charlie!” Logan called and scrambled to his feet. “Are you okay?” I began crying, I was falling, I was broken. Logan looked at me for a second before pulling my body into his and cradling me. We stayed like that for a while before a slight realization hit me.
“Don’t you have a class to teach right now?” I ask looking up at the man that held me in his lap.
“It’s my conference period.” Logan shrugged.
“Oh.”
“Can I know what happened to your face and hand?” Logan asked and gently glided his hand across my casted one.
“I fell down the stairs in my house.” I lied, I was planning on telling that story anyway. I just wanted the bruises to go away.
“Is that how you got that cut on your cheek?” I froze, when did Father cut my cheek? I don’t remember. I heard Logan sigh. “You don’t have to protect anyone you know.” He smiled, a sad, tired smile. “But I won’t force you to tell me anything either.” I nodded and a breeze blew through the air causing me to snuggle into the warmest thing, which happened to be Logan at that time. “You’re so cute.” Logan chuckled.
“I-it’s cold.” I mumbled. Logan smiled and helped me stand so he could.
“Well, I have to go to work. I need to get the lesson ready.” I nodded and looked at the floor, he was so warm. Suddenly I felt something warm cover me. I looked up and saw Logan putting his jacket on me. “I hope to see you at school tomorrow.” He smiled and walked off to the parking lot of the park.
After another half hour I headed home. Logan’s jacket engulfing me. When I made it home Father was long gone and Mother was home alone. I entered the house to find Mother making pancakes.
“It’s too cold for you to be out there for so long. Where were you?” Mother was finishing the last of the pancakes.
“I was at the park.” I smiled remembering my encounter with Logan.
“Whose jacket is that?” Mother’s voice asked. I escaped my memory to see a smile spreading across Mother’s face. “Is there something you want to tell me?” My face immediately heated with color.
“N-no.”
“You sure about that honey? I won’t be mad, he’s cute.” Mother smiled and pulled me into the kitchen and sitting me at the table. “So, what’s his name?” I sighed, Logan mentioned asking Mother where to find me.
“Logan.” I mumbled, unhappy but happy. “He’s my teacher.” I added knowing Mother would find out eventually since she obviously didn’t know.
“I know.” Mother placed a plate of pancakes in front of me. “He cares about you Charlie. Age is just a number and in two months, if you decide you like him, it’ll be legal.”
“Mother, it’s August.”
“I know. August twenty-second. So, almost two months.
“Mother, three months.”
“Okay, okay, it’s two months.”
“Mother-”
“Eat your pancakes.” I pouted but began eating. Me and Logan? He’s my teacher, he would get fired.
The next day I decided to go to school because I wanted to let Zylerie and the boys know I was okay. Mother was skeptical, because of my hand, but let me go when Father decided he was to stay home because he ‘wasn’t feeling well’. I walked to the table we sat at in the morning to find some guys trash-talking Max and Lukas. I walked up and they all noticed me. I saw that the boys trash talking were Luther and Zack.
“So, the fag decided to come to school.” Luther laughed.
“He probably stayed home and cried.” Zack snorted. I clutched Logan’s jacket that was wrapped around my shoulders, it still smelled like him. I shook my head trying to get the absurd thought from my head. He’s my teacher!
“Boys!” A deep voice boomed. I turned and saw Logan standing behind me, speak of the devil. Logan smiled at me, “Glad you could make it today Charlie. How’s that hand?”
“Fine.” I mumbled, a light blush spreading across my cheeks. Logan place a hand on my shoulder.
“Luther, Zack.” Logan looked at the two boys. “What were you two doing?”
“We...we were trying to befriend the fags?” Luther asked.
“I was here the whole time Luther,” Logan growled. “You two, go to the principal's office.” Luther and Zack walked to the principal's office with their head down.
“You’re pretty cool.” Lukas smiled.
“Thank you.” Logan smiled. “Are you boys alright?” We nodded and Logan smiled at us. “Well I'll see you in class.” Logan patted my head and looked at Max, “I’ll see you too.” Logan then walked away.
“W-wait! Logan your-” I called.
“Just give it to me later.” Logan dismissed with a wave of his hand. I sighed and turned to Max and Lukas.
“Where’s Zylerie and Tobias?” I asked looking for the twins.
“That jackets too big for you.” Max stated. Stupid Logan and his six-foot whatever height!
“Are they here today?” I asked, ignoring the boys' question. Max and Lukas gave me a weird look, I never avoided questions.
“Yeah, they’re on their way, Tobias forgot something when we were walking here.”  Max explained, his eyes slightly sad.
“Everything alright?” I asked, noticing something off.
“Yeah… everything’s fine. I’m just worried.”
“SKYYYYYYY!!!!!!. A voice yelled. No one knew my middle name, maybe they were calling someone else.
“Um… someone’s heading this way.” Lukas informed after I sat down and the person stopped yelling “Sky”.
“Who?” I asked turning around and seeing a guy walking this way.
“I don’t know him.” Max stated.
“Me either.” Lukas said then the boys looked at me. Recognition of the boy slowly started to register in my mind.
The boy’s eyes found mine in the crowd and he smiled. Many girls were looking at him, drooling over his seven foot height, his midnight black hair and purple eyes.
“He’s kind of cute though.” Lukas remarked, Max nodded in agreement. We all knew Max was more into Tobias, even if Tobias didn't know it. I slowly stood up, dropping my bag onto the floor, and I saw Logan from the corner of my eye giving me a weird look.
The boy gave me a knowing smile and opened his arms. I ran and jumped into his arms. He picked me up and I wrapped my legs around him as he kissed my cheek and spun around. Through the spinning I saw Logan glaring.
“Sky,” he breathed, “I’ve missed you so much.” I smiled slipping my hands in his hair, a small sign to tell him I was slipping.
“I’ve missed you too Oz.” Oz smiled and adjusted me so I wouldn’t fall.
“No, I’m serious Charlie,” Oz continued walking to the table Max and Lukas were at, “I missed you.” I smiled.
“I missed you too Ozcar.” I replied when we made it to the table, calling him by his full name. Ozcar smiled and sat down with me in his lap.
"How has my bunny been?" Ozcar asked as I snuggled into his chest.
"I've been good." I mumbled then heard two people clear their throat. I lifted my head and turned to Max and Lukas. Blushing, I realized I was sitting on Ozcars lap in front of everyone. "O-Oz... these are my friends Max and Lukas." Ozcar smiled at me.
"Still as shy as ever," he mumbled. "Hey, I'm Ozcar, thank you guys for taking care of my bunny."
"Oz!" I whined.
"What is going on!?" Zylerie's voice yelled. The four of us turned and saw Zylerie and Tobias walking to us.
"Who are they?" Ozcar whispered.
"Zylerie and Tobias," I answered, "my other friends." I felt Ozcars arms tighten around me in a bear hug.
"My bunny made friends! So many friends!" Zylerie stopped when she realized Ozcar wasn't tormenting us.
"Who are you?" She asked.
"I'm Ozcar, you must be Zylerie." Ozcar smiled and looked at Tobias. "And you must be Tobias, its nice to meet you guys. I'm so glad my bunny found friends like you four!" I knew Ozcar was saying the truth, I never had friends, not even within family. Although Ozcar was a truthful, honest, person, a lie was bound to come.
"What are you to Charlie though?" Lukas asked. I knew Zylerie wanted to ask, she had that protective look.
"My bunny never mentioned me?" Ozcar faked hurt. "I'm Charlie's boyfriend."
