Maaria's POV
Sitting next to Christopher and Carrie, while the Prime Minister continues on with his prayer. Christopher reaches out for me to hold his hand and I compelled for a short moment but reluctantly took it, not wanting to cause gossip to spread around town. After the Prime Minister was done, it was my turn to make the speech and I stood up and sighted, looking back onto the years was more than enough, more than we could have asked for.
"We were just children when we lost everything...our parents, our home, our innocence. Once envied by all our neighbors, suddenly, we found ourselves cast off, stranded at a bus depot with thirty dollars in our pockets and no hope in sight. That was when Henny found us. And she brought us to Dr. Sheffield, or, as Paul would say, she brought us home. He took us in. He adopted us. He sent us to the best schools. But more than that he made my brother and sister and I feel safe and loved. Paul's in a better place now. We al know that, but we will never forget him. We will never forget our past."
I finished up my speech and start to walk away from everyone, not wanting to be near no one or talk to much people. Soon afterwards, Christopher and Carrie came by my side and held onto my hand.
Later on in the house, everyone came over to offer their condolences. I walked to the entrance of the house, standing in the middle of it inside, looking out the window, remembering when the first time we got brought here.
"Miss Maria? Miss Maria?" I heard Henny and walked over to her as sh extends her hands and I take her hands,"How you holding up, baby?" I hugged her and sighted a little.
"I'm doing okay, Henny."
"Listen...I just want you to know that I will always be here for you. Dr. Sheffield made sure of that." I smile a little bit and nod my head.
"Thank you."
I walked further into the house, trying to look for Carrie but Christopher came into my view and I looked at him sadly.
"Carrie's having a pretty rough time."
I looked over and saw Carrie alone, crying. I touch his chest and walked over to where Carrie was sitting. I sat next to her and brought her into my arms for comfort.
"Will we have to leave again, like when Daddy died?" I shake my head gently and soothed her as best as possible.
"No, no baby girl. This is our home. Paul left it for us. We're gonna be just fine."
She nods her head a little bit and her head was on my shoulder. I hugged her and comforted her as best as I could. Someday, just someday. I kissed the top of her head and kept on comforting her. Afterwards Carrie went inside and most of the people were gone. I noticed Christopher wasn't in the room and possibly up in his room. Henny and Carrie were cleaning and I slowly walked to my room upstairs, but with every step I made every voice echoed through my head.
