The darkness was empowering. Swallowing up any light that dared peek through the tiny room. As if threatening the creatures kept trapped inside it.
My cage clanged against another as they swayed. The feeling of being so high in such a small area felt petrifying, but I wasn't scared anymore. I was used to this really, being in cages. First being with the scientists, and now being here. It had become a regular part of my life at this point.
I let out a small sigh, completely unheard by anything but me. I honestly lost track of how much time I spent in this cage. Could have been weeks, months, years even. But I wasn't sure.
How did I get to this point? It was a long story, one that currently did not have a happy ending. And if I was being honest, I didn't think it was getting one.
One.
My life had been perfect. I had parents who loved me, an awesome, if not a bit annoying, little sister.
Two.
The car crash was what changed things.
Three.
I will always remember that day. It was the day my parent's left this world. The day my world changed forever.
The day my parents were killed.
Four.
I had only been ten, and I was left drowning in a harsh reality. The world was not all sunshine and rainbows. Life wasn't fair. I learned that when I was left all alone with a little sister and a group of strangers.
Five.
My life from that point on had been a struggle. My sister and I went from foster home to foster home, looking for a family.
Six.
But we never found one.
Seven.
When I was finally eighteen, we moved out. I had bought a small little cottage in a quaint little town in Virginia.
Eight.
It had been perfect there. Avis could go to school, I was able to make enough money, but I should've known it couldn't have lasted.
Nine.
It never did.
