It didn't take long for Skye to swap out her bloodstained clothes for something cleaner.

A shower would've been nice too, but time wasn't on their side.

Elena and Rebekah could be anywhere by now.

If they lost their trail, they'd have to start the search all over again. And those two? They weren't exactly a pair you wanted running loose.

As she fastened the last button on her crisp white blouse, she turned toward the mirror, studying her reflection.

Pale skin. Blue eyes, still striking. Lips, full and flushed.

She looked... normal.

Fine, even.

It felt like a lie.

Her fingers twitched at her sides as she tore her gaze away from the glass. A final glance at the room—at the lingering memory of last night—was the only thing that softened the edges of her grief.

Then she closed the door behind her.

The drive felt endless.

They'd been on the road all day, into the night, and now dawn was creeping in. They were close to Damon's last known location, but that didn't mean they were anywhere near done.

The only thing tethering her to the moment was Stefan's hand in hers, resting between their seats.

She could feel his eyes on her from time to time, quiet and searching, but she kept hers fixed outside the window, watching as the world blurred past.

Everything that had happened in the past few days was pressing down on her, crushing her beneath the weight of it all. She didn't know how to feel, what to say, what to think.

"Can you call Damon and put him on speaker?"

Stefan's voice cut through the silence, startling her. Neither of them had spoken in hours.

Still, she wordlessly reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed.

A beat later, Damon's voice crackled through the speaker.

"Took you long enough. I was starting to get bored to death."

Huh. Who would've thought she'd actually miss his voice and all the insufferable snark that came with it?

"Yeah, well, I had things to take care of. I'm not just on standby for whenever you screw up," Stefan shot back, casting Skye a look as he turned the corner.

Damon's figure appeared in the distance.

"Whatever, I see your dumb car. Hanging up now."

The second they pulled up, Stefan rolled the window down.

"Put the canisters in the back and get in."

"Yeah, yeah, no need to be so pushy," Damon grumbled as he popped the trunk, tossing the gas inside before sliding into the backseat.

His head popped between them, eyes flicking toward Skye with a smirk.

"Hey, lovebirds. Good to see you up and about again, princess."

She rolled her eyes and flicked him in the forehead.

He recoiled, then let out a low whistle.

"You got yourself a feisty one, Stef. Who bit you in the ass this morning?"

Skye scoffed, arms crossing over her chest as Stefan pulled back onto the road.

Never mind. She hadn't missed Damon at all.
