Will wouldn't let me see him. He stationed Travis and Audrey outside his door and told them not to let me in. Before I could begin to argue with them though, Audrey flung herself into my arms, sobbing.
What?
For the second time that afternoon, I felt like my jaw was going to disconnect from my skull. Audrey was crying? The same Audrey that bulldozed her way through everything and everyone? The same one that got flung by an angry alpha werewolf, promptly got up, dusted herself and poofed her and two others out of there?
I gave Travis a pleading look. He gave me one back.
No help there. Okay, how to go about this...
Slowly, I put my arms around her, patting her on the back gently. "What's wrong, Audrey?" I asked gently.
"I'm useless," she sniffled. "I couldn't heal my alpha, couldn't find anything on the woman who's out for his blood and can't even convince him to talk to us about what's bothering him now."
I stepped back, placing my hands on her shoulders and peering into her tear-streaked face. She was apparently one of those people who still looked put-together while bawling their eyes out. The only difference was the vulnerability in her green gaze. I felt a protective urge rise at the display of weakness. She was taller, older, and a hell of a lot more stronger than me, but I felt it anyway.
I shook my head at her. "You couldn't find a way to heal Will but you're still trying to find a way to save him from that..in..incubus thing or whatever. I say that counts."
She pressed her lips into a thin line. "I can't find anything on her-"
I tightened my fingers, feeling her stiffen under the silk fabric of her green evening shirt. "You'll find it. I believe you will."
She stared at me, maybe deciding whether I was lying or not. I wasn't. She was brilliant and if anyone could find a way out, I knew it would be her. Or maybe Frieda Andrews.
"I will," Audrey nodded. She wiped at her cheeks calmly. "Of course I will."
"Good," I said, relieved. "As for the Alpha Eater, I found . I'll tell you after I speak to Will."
Audrey stepped away, narrowing her eyes at Travis when he didn't budge.
"He's going to take his anger out on me later," Travis grumbled, but moved aside. "When you're done talking tell him not to look for me. I quit."
Travis stalked over to the elevators, pressing furiously at the down button.
"We'll be waiting in the lobby," Audrey said, patting me on the shoulder. "Let's have dinner while we talk. Will can join if he wants."
I doubted he'd want to have dinner with me after this but I smiled in agreement anyway.

When I opened the door to Will's apartment I found a setting structurally identical to our own- a spacious living room, a kitchen with classical wooden floors and pale blue marble tops. There was a long hallway I knew led to three other bedrooms, each with their own bathrooms. I knew Will used the first bedroom on the right but I'd only been there a few times before, resisting temptation and all that. Today I didn't hesitate one bit, didn't even pause as I stalked over to his room.
For as long as I've known Will, he's been protective of his family and friends, always putting them before himself. It hasn't bothered me much before- but that was before he was ruining his chances of survival by falling for a few taunts and beating the living daylights out of my new friend in front of his sweet mother. Let's not forget the fact that he'd gotten cut down while protecting me, then proceeded to sell his soul so he could continue protecting me. This self-sacrificing hero bull was too much.
Forget our little conversations last night and this morning, we were going to properly talk it out like proper, rational adults. I expected shouting, cursing and more shouting but it was honestly past time we had it out.
I threw open the door.
What I didn't expect to find was the Alpha Eater standing by an open window, staring at Will, who had his head laid down on the incubus' lap.
The incubus glanced between us both, batting her thick eyelashes as her fingers continued to stroke Will's curly hair. "Well this is embarrassing."
