I sat there watching Dansby warm up. I was absolutely terrified that he would see me, so I wore a hoodie that would cover my eyes for the most part.
As game time neared, I noticed the coach of the team ushering me down. Unsure of what he wanted, I walked down to him.
"One of our players wants to talk to you."
"Oh. Who?" I asked, hoping it wasn't him.
"Dansby Swanson. He'll be here shortly." he said before walking away.
"I turned my back to the field and tried to steady my breathing. I kept my hood on in hopes that Dansby was just asking about my job, and not that he recognized me.
I felt a tap on my shoulder and slowly turned around.
"Hey." he said to me.
"Hi." I said, trying to change my voice a little bit.
"So are you the scout?" he asked.
"That would be me."
"Can I ask why you're wearing a hoodie in 100 degree weather?"
"Ummm... comfort?" I said, but it almost came out as more of a question. I was just relieved that he wasn't showing any signs on recognizing me.
"Okay, I should head back to the dug out." he said and I visibly relaxed when he didn't bring up who I was.
He was halfway across the field before a turned back to me.
"Oh, and it was nice talking to you, Melany."
