Separation by Seasons

CHAPTER ONE ~ Ember

My heart was pounding as I ran along the sidewalk to school, I was going to be late.... Again!

"OH NO! I'm gonna be late! UGH!" I thought to myself.

As soon I got to school I opened my locker and started towards the class. I looked at my watch and saw that I was really early, it was only 8:03, I had seven minutes to spare. Wow.

Just then the bell rang and I raced to my first class, looks like my watch was off.

(I have Mr. Felix for science, usually, I'm the last one in the classroom, and I am again.)

When I got inside, I found Felix doing attendance.

I'm ok with attendance since I'm the last one in all the classes.

"Alexa Yarrow?"

"Here!" yelled Alexa.

Mr. Felix started doing attendance early today since he was already at 'Y'.

"Ember Zenobia?"

"I'm.... here....!" I gasped out of breath from running to get to class, thank the gods that I wasn't late.

"Ember I had almost marked you tardy, but you got lucky.... this time!"

I sighed and went to go sit down at my seat in between my BFFs, Dahlia and Xander. Dahlia, Xander, and I have known each other our whole lives. We also live across the street from each other. We all met each other when we were five, so the three of us have known each other for eleven years. So if you do the math we are all 16 years old.

"Ember!" I jumped in my seat. "Would you like to tell everyone the science explaining how the Earth is split into two seasons?"

"Umm, well, you see...." I thought about this. I wanted to say that Mother Nature was the case, but everyone would have laughed so instead I said... "Well, the answer to that is in none of our brains. I don't know the answer, you don't know the answer, that's what everyone in the world is trying to figure out. So maybe instead of teaching us what people don't know, teach us what they do."

When I finished I could feel everybody staring at me, but I kept my focus on Mr. Felix, meanwhile, he looked very confused. I snuck a glance at Dahlia, she gave me two thumbs up under the table. I glanced back to Xander he smiled. I looked back at Mr. Felix he muttered something no one could hear and walked back to his desk. I could hear the keys on the keyboard clicking as Mr. Felix typed. After he was done clicking he got back to teaching as if nothing had happened. I have a way of making teachers feel sorry that they have me in their classes. I kept looking at my notes over and over again because I didn't want to look at anybody in the room.

A few minutes later I got called down to the front office. I was afraid that it had something to do with Mr. Felix.

"Sorry for the interruption but would Ember Zenobia please come down to the main office. Thank you!" I recognized that as Ms. Winery, the school principal. As I got out of my seat, both Dahlia and Xander looked at me apologetically as I walked out of the room, I didn't dare look back.
