Lanore’s second day at her home was a gray one.

The sky was pale with dark clouds stretching across it. A cold wind blew through the morning air and Lanore watched as it blew through the sky, shaking the branches softly.

Lanore had been unable to sleep last night and she had the dark bags to prove it.

All night, she had heard the trees whispering and the sounds of faint music. Her feet had tingled with the urge to dance through the night and she had laid there in bed, wishing for it all to end.

Finally, just before dawn, it had.

“Honey? Were you listening?”

Lanore looked away from the window and aimed her brown eyes at her mother.

“I’m sorry, what?”

She smiled softly and said

“I swear, it’s like you’re in a totally different world half of the time. I was asking you how unpacking was going.”

“Oh, fine. I never realized that I had so much stuff.”

Her mother laughed and said

“That’s the down side of moving, reliving all of your bad shopping mistakes. Speaking of shopping, we have to get you some school stuff.”

“Couldn’t we wait a while?”

Her mother shook her head and said

“Sweetie, school only started last month. No on will even notice that you weren’t there in September.”

“But I don’t know anyone.”

“You didn’t know anyone in Charleston and you did great there!”

Which was actually true.

But Charleston Prep had been filled with kids like her. Quiet and a little odd. They’d all carry around big fantasy novels and art supplies.

Lanore had only had a few friends and she had been comfortable with them.

But here, Lanore had been homeschooled before and all of the other kids had gone to school together. They all knew each other and were accustomed to the normal flow of things.

Personally, Lanore didn’t want to upset the flow.

“I’m just nervous, that’s all.” She said.

“I know, honey. But you’ll be fine. You’ll find your people there.”
