Chapter 7
The storm rages over us, and we're left untouched by it inside our new dwelling. It's easier to sleep at night knowing we're safer now. In the morning, I take up my spear and machete to sharpen it by the fire. Kayla appears in the dim Torchlight, still an early riser.
"Are you heading out already?" Kayla asks.
"Yes, I'm going to explore some more nearby. Hopefully I'll catch a rabbit or two. Something for today at least." I say.
"That'd be nice. The twins were light headed on the walk up, I'm sure they just need some protein." Kayla says.
"I need to find another hog. Some fatty proteins would be fantastic." I say.
"Ahh, you're right. We could roast it over the fire pit." Kayla agrees.
"Fingers crossed." I say, showing her mine.
"Gotcha." Kayla nods. Then asks. "How can you even see what you're doing? It's so dark in here."
I pause, looking down at my spear for a second. I can see perfectly fine. I look around the room. I can see everything just fine. I merely shrug, and continue sharpening my spear. Perfect, I think, appraising my now dangerously sharp spear.
"Eh?" I ask, holding it up.
"It looks good." Kayla agrees.
"Hopefully it'll be stained with blood when I get back." I grin.
I duck into the room where the water runs, taking a long drink. Then I grab my things to go. Kayla follows me to the door.
"I'd ask to come with, but I'd be just as useless out there as I am here." She says.
I pivot on my heal, turning to face her. Kayla jolts to a stop, startled by my sudden movement. I reach out towards her.
"What did I tell you about saying that?" I say, flicking her forehead gently.
"Hey!" Kayla complains, rubbing her forehead.
"Silly woman, you need to listen." I laugh.
"Okay, okay." Kayla says.
"I'll see you later, hold down the fort, alright?" I say, handing her the other machete.
"Okay, see you later." Kayla nods, taking it.
I duck out the door, shutting it firmly behind me. The woods are still waking up around us. It feels odd, having been not been outside for a night. I follow the rolling hills for a few miles, and perch myself in a tree overhead. There's hog tracks nearby, and signs of one rooting around in the wet topsoil. I wait for most of the day, scanning the area, and moving positions once.
Despite the evidence of some larger game in the area. I have no luck hunting. I'm not so sure about moving us out here as I make my way back to the others. A dark cloud looms over my head as I go. What if I've doomed us? What if I can't catch anything? When I return, Kayla greets me. Everyone's taking a dip in the stream near the waterfall to cool off.
"You didn't catch anything?" Kayla asks.
"No, it was a rather uneventful hunt." I sigh.
"That's alright. We foraged while you were gone, and found some things." Kayla says.
"How did the day go?" I ask.
"Pretty well, everyone worked really hard." Kayla says.
I sit beside her, watching the grown women play as if it were their first time in water. Gigi and Rory are currently trying to drowned each other.
