Water. One of the four elements. Seems so futile, yet essential to every living entity on Earth. However, what humans have not discovered, is that it can be used as one of the most deadly weapons. As powerful as the strength of Superman. Almost as fast as the Flash. It can give someone the wisdom of Wonder Woman, but only in the hands of the worthy one.
Yet none of these superheroes have the right to learn this ancient art. Sometimes, to look for worthiness, you must seek a younger, brighter sole.
Two kids were facing back to back on the pavement of the sub-urban streets of Philadelphia. They look up at the raven black sky, searching for a glinting star. The photochemical smog ensures that only a keen eye can spot a glowing ball of hot gas from many light-years away. It's the game they would play every night, just for a moment of silence. It was the distraction they needed.
The ten-year-old girl turned her head to see the boy behind him, his head faced up. His eyes were squinting, yet full of curiosity. She was going to miss this.
"You are meant to be looking," the boy says, rolling his eyes, "or have you found one?"
The boy was not particularly fond of this game, but it was a good excuse to get out of his foster home. The girl used to be a good excuse for him to go to his local library after sunset. It was not the most fascinating of places, but it was the only way he could search for his birth mother. It has already been six long years since he last saw her face, but he could still see it every time he would close his eyes as he went to sleep.
"Yeah I know the rules," she whispers as she smiles. When she first met the boy, he despised her. But somehow she was able to soften him slightly. She knew he hated the game, but he did it for her. It was the only way she could get out of her house. They became friends. Her only friend. The silence lengthened, as they both continued on their hopeless search. The girl knew this was probably the last time she will be sitting out both of their houses crosslegged. She wanted to tell him, but instead, she just stayed quiet, savoring the moment.
A high pitched scream shattered the silence, coming from the house next door. The boy jumps, but the girl remains still, not changing her position, knowing that was her cue to leave.
"Your sister..." the boy murmurs, waiting for the girl to rush off.
"I am running away," she says, cutting him off. The boy remains unphased. "Not running away like you."
"What do you mean?" the boy scoffs, as she rolls her eyes.
"I mean I am running away for good. I need to see if it's true," she continues, as she takes a postcard from her pocket. He was no stranger to it, but he there was now a frown on his face.
"You already have a family..." he whispers, and he turns to face her.
"That's the point," she continues, "I need to see if they are my real..."
"No!" he shouts, "you don't get it. They have been with you since you were born. But for me? I have moved from home to home."
"Look you can't stop me. I just wanted to let you know,"
The girl stands up from her place, starting to head back to her home. She pauses, to think of her last words, but hesitates to know the longer she spends time with the boy, the more she would want to stay.
"Bye William..."
"No,' he interrupts, wincing at the fact she tried to say it, "You know I hate good-byes." He reaches into the pocket of his oversized black hoodies and takes out a pearl ring. Sighing, even though all he could feel was anger, desperation, and betrayal at that moment, he would have regretted not giving it to here.
"Here," he continues as he hands her the ring. Before she could say anything else, he ran back into the house next door.
She stands on the pavement of the sub-urban streets of Philadelphia. She looks down at the small ring, glinting in the street lights. She lets out a breath, without knowing she was holding it, and she looks up. That's when she saw it. A glowing star, all alone, in the raven black sky.
