Christmas is a time when frozen hearts melt. It's a time when hidden feelings come to light, and the jubilant jostle of teasing from friends exchanged, winks and prods go around like the air we breathe.
Well... that's what I'm told by my friends. It's more of just a pointless rederec they feed to me to keep me happy. I mean, he never even smiles! My rising hopes that this year will be different might just be pointless endeavors to find love, but as always I have a small hope that seems to mount during the holidays.
I walk in the hallway, headed to the dorm. Before I turn the knob and push the door open, I hear cheers and whoops coming from the room. I put on a smile and walk in. All nine heads turn to me, and I immediately notice the legs dangling from the top bunks and the way everyone is gravitated towards the middle of the room. Eren and Mikasa stand in the center of the room, Eren's face as red as Mikasa's scarf. My eye catches mistletoe above their heads. A chorus of hellos welcomed me, and I gave a small wave. "Hi everyone." I say.
"We just started (Y/N), come sit by me." My friend Sasha beckons me over and I oblige, climbing up the ladder then take my place beside her.
This was our second year doing our little "tradition". On Christmas Eve, nine of us, gather together and play a game, going late into the night. The day after, Christmas day, we exchange gifts. We're going to tell stories and confess tonight. It's pretty fun, considering my crush isn't even there. Last year when I shared my feelings to the group, the girls fawned over me and said "awww", and the boys said that I should make a move, which altogether made me blush.
Like seriously guys, no thank you.
It's hard enough to restrain myself from staring at him ALL day...
"What did I miss?" I ask.
Sasha shrugs, taking a bite of her potato. "Mikasa finally confessed. She said her favorite things about him too." She mumbles eith her mouth full. My eyebrows perk up a little. She hadn't last year. Eren and Mikasa sit under us, on the lower bunk. I lean forward and look at them from above, seeing their entwined fingers. Satisfied, I lean back against the wall. Sasha pulls a name from a hat. "Jean," She reads aloud.
I now acknowledge his presence and he takes the floor. A dismal look is plastered on his face. "I-I still like M-Mikasa." He stuttered.
Jean received many sympathetic looks, but none came from Eren or Mikasa. Awe, too bad. Sucks to suck. He stumbled back to his seat beside Connie. Then I realized something, he had skipped the story telling about Mikasa.
But he had already suffered enough, it'd be rude to make him talk about someone who rejected him. Or would it?
Another name is drawn from the hat, and Sasha opens her mouth to speak after swallowing another mouthful. However, before she can, she is interrupted by the door opening. I look over her shoulder, and see her name.
"The party has arrived!" That voice. Oh no, oh no, oh no. Of course I just HAD to tell Hanji the other day who I liked. Great. Hanji walks in, someone else lingering in the doorway. It's him. My (e/c) eyes shoot open, then I force them to go back to normal. I can't help but cast my eyes on him, the way his fabulous gray eyes survey the room, his ebony-colored hair framing his perfect face. I wiped the slight drool from the corner of my mouth and Sasha elbowed me, looking suggestively with a raised eyebrow. I turned my face away.
"Ah, Hanji, Levi. You're just in time for our next selection." Krista said with a smirk from the other side of Sasha. Oh no, she must have seen my name.
Levi turns his head and his eyes bore into mine, making me want to shrink back and become very small, even smaller than Levi. I tear my eyes away and look at Sasha, waiting for the sound of my name.
"Connie." Sasha says. I catch her gaze out of the corner of my eye as she directed her attention to Connie. Slightly confused but grateful, I keep my mouth shut.
-Time skip-
The morning was now young and I still hadn't gone, but everyone was still here. Including Levi and Hanji. I doubt Levi is dense, but I wonder if he was keeping tabs on who went...
I found myself sitting on the top bunk by myself, Sasha feeding Connie a potato somewhere on one of the bottom bunks. I hug my arms tightly and watched Hanji (unannounced I should add) take the floor.
"It has come to my attention," She said, "that (Y/N) has not spoken a word about who she likes." I almost let out a groan, but restrained myself from doing so.
A chorus of "oohs" rose up as if on cue. I blinked everything out of focus for a momentand when things became normal again, I was standing in the center of the room. All eyes were on me.
"I-I... Can't say." My eyes fell to the floor and I stumbled out of the room, wanting to go outside. Anywhere, actually, except for the dorm. I had almost made it outside, and then I felt a hand on my shoulder. I then realized the hand was not my own, and that I had indeed been followed. I kept my eyes on the floor.
"(Y/N), look at me. And that's an order." A bored-sounding voice commanded. I turned and looked at him.
"What do you want?" I snapped at him.
He raised an eyebrow.
"S-sir." I added, my boldness now shrinking, I bowed my head.
"Why didn't you say who you like?"
"..." Silence answered him, and his scowl became even more frightening.
"Answer me Cadet (Y/N)."
"I-I... like... You." I mumbled. The grip on my shoulder loosened, and his hand dropped.
He raised an eyebrow. "I thought you might have liked that Jeager brat..."
"Well I don't." I turned on my heel and walked away.
But before I could go too far, I felt one hand on each of my shoulders.
"I like you too, (Y/N)." He whispered in my ear. A chill went down my spine. "Now go away, you brat." He gave me a shove and I walked away, not looking back.
